Facing a lawsuit, teachers at a couple Tennessee high schools joined with students for singing at this week’s See You At The Pole, but according to the Tennessean, they didn’t pray: Andrew Schmeltzer, an English teacher and assistant baseball coach at Wilson Central High School, sang along to student-led hymns but said he was careful to step aside when prayers began. “As long as I don’t do any leadership with that, that’s fine,” he said. via Teachers gather, don’t pray... It has been common practice among church planters to start their churches in public schools: they’re cheap, empty on Sundays, have good parking, and have auditoriums with PA systems built in. It’s everything an erstwhile church planter could want. I’ve been to many services in public schools, including a couple in NYC. Now it looks like the Supreme Court may be ruling on whether this practice is a violation of church and state: A New York City church is asking... Read more
Albert Mohler antagonist, Karl Giberson, has some excellent thoughts on why evangelicals so warmly embrace pseudoscience (e.g., creationism): Why have evangelicals been so ready to reject the generally accepted conclusions of the scientific community on global warming? I want to suggest that the reason has nothing to do with climate science per se, but derives from the generally dim view that many evangelicals have of science and scientists — views that make it hard to distinguish credible science from fake... Today Amazon will debut their new tablet, the Kindle Fire. My guess is that it’s going to be quite awesome, and that it’s going to be $100 less than and iPad. Also, Amazon is likely going to throw in some goodies, like lifetime Amazon Prime with some versions. That would be pretty awesome, too. Jana Riess interviewed me about my new book and about my adventure in self-publishing for her blog, and she’ll post the interview next week. I think... Read more
The Dalai Lama is apparently not leaving his reincarnation to chance. Taking a page from the playbook of millenialist Christians who leave instructional videos for their unraptured loved ones, the DL will leave written instructions about his own reincarnation: DHARMSALA, India (AP) — The Dalai Lama said Saturday if he is to be reincarnated he will leave clear written instructions about the process, but that the matter is unlikely to come up for a number of years. The Tibetan spiritual... Read more
I’m part of an online event today called “The Nines.” You can watch short videos from me and many others HERE. My contribution is about how to develop a writing habit. (My other submission, in which I was holding a bottle of wine, was not approved.) The conference starts at 9am CDT. You can watch for free. It’s a pretty heavily evangelical crowd, and it’s aimed at people in vocational ministry, just FYI. Read more
I realize that most of you don’t come here to read about my hunting exploits. So I won’t bore you (or disgust you) with them. But suffice it to say that I had a great opening weekend here in Central Minnesota: a couple wood ducks in the bag; one goose shot, retrieved, plucked, cleaned, roasted, and eaten with stuffing and gravy; a top-notch performance by first-time hunter Albert (seen above); and unparalleled companionship by champion duck caller Jason Mitchell.
