After a summer vacation, the Questions That Haunt Christianity series is back. Readers pose questions – you can submit your questions here – I post the the question on Tuesday, readers comment throughout the week, and I take my crack at an answer on Friday. Nothing I’ve undertaken in my career has so sharpened my skills as a practical theologian, so I’m excited (and daunted) by a new season of QTH. To start the new season of QTH, we’ve got a... Read more

Manuscript Monday is a series I’ll be writing as I work on my forthcoming book. If you’ve got a question about the process of writing a book, drop me a line and I’ll include it in the series. I’ve gotten a couple questions by email lately about using a literary agent. Picking and using an agent is a tricky thing, so here’s my story: (more…) Read more

I want to add my voice to the chorus that is urging President Obama not to bomb Syria. Yesterday the British Parliament issued a sharp rebuke to PM David Cameron’s sabre-rattling when they voted against any military intervention in Syria: WASHINGTON — President Obama is prepared to move ahead with a limited military strike on Syria, administration officials said Thursday, despite a stinging rejection of such action by America’s stalwart ally Britain and mounting questions from Congress. The negative vote... Read more

The Obama administration is bringing the power of the federal government to bear in supporting gay marriage. First, the attorney general’s office refused to enforce DOMA, then they repealed DADT in the military, and now the IRS will afford marital tax benefits to all legally married couples, regardless of what state they reside in: WASHINGTON — All same-sex couples who are legally married will be recognized as such for federal tax purposes, even if the state where they live... Read more

A new study by Baylor University shows that a quarter of self-described evangelicals are ambivalent about gay marriage and civil unions. For their study — “How the Messy Middle Finds a Voice: Evangelicals and Structured Ambivalence toward Gays and Lesbians” — researchers analyzed national data from the 2010 Baylor Religion Survey, a random sample of 1,714 individuals across the country. Researchers found that 24 percent of evangelicals fit into the ambivalent category, supporting gay civil unions even though they are... Read more

So, it seems I — and all of you who are part of the emergence of Christianity — are bent on destroying America. So are Communists and Muslims. So says Art Ally, in his forthcoming seminar at the Values Voter Summit: If that’s too small to read, here’s the text: IS IT TOO LATE TO RECLAIM AMERICA? Speaker: Art Ally, Founder and President, The Timothy Plan Synopsis: This session will equip you to engage in the debate over the war for the... Read more

My bedside reading this week is an advanced copy of Nadia Bolz-Weber‘s theological memoir, Pastrix: The Cranky, Beautiful Faith of a Sinner and a Saint. In addition to the arrestingly beautiful author photo on the cover (taken by the incomparable Courtney Perry), it deserves a wide readership for a number of reasons. Nadia and I met, I think, in 2008. We became fast friends, and have been ever since. I’ve joyfully watched her rise to become an ecclesial elite, and... Read more

Years ago, back when it still happened, I spoke at the Cornerstone Festival. I did a couple gigs there with Phyllis Tickle, and a couple on my own. Then I was on a panel discussion on gays and the church. On the panel with me were Rich Amesbury, a professor of ethics at Claremont School of Theology, Andrew Marin of the Marin Foundation, Christine Sneeringer from Worthy Creations Ministry, and Frank Carrasco of Exodus International. The panel was intriguing, but what happened after was really formative for me.... Read more

Vice blogger Jamie Taete, usually more known for raunchy stories about things like Corey Feldman’s birthday party, somehow found himself in the Creation and Earth History Museum in San Diego. What he found was mainly walls filled with writing, plus more written materials for you to take home… (more…) Read more
