Ramadan Support for Black Muslim Political Prisoners

Ramadan Support for Current and Former Black Muslim Political Prisoners

This #BlackMuslimRamadan, show solidarity with Black Muslim political prisoners, who have been incarcerated for bravely and heroically challenging the racial caste system that Blacks were and continued to be subjected to in America.    This Ramadan we are calling upon the Muslim community to reach out to such political prisoners.  Write Ramadan letters of support, support their Parole campaigns,  and/or donate to the social causes of Black Muslim political prisoners.

H. Rap Brown a.k.a Imam Jamil Al-Amin

As a leader in SNCC, Rap Brown spoke fearlessly against U.S government’s systemic oppression against Black People.  Like Malcolm  X before him, Rap Brown taught black people that they had a right to self-defense,”Freedom is something that has to be gotten and taken by the people who are oppressed.”  Rap Brown would be arrested in connection   to riots as it was called by authorities, but what he would refer to as rebellions.  While serving time in jail, H. Rap Brown converted to Islam and changed his name to Imam Jamil Al-Amin. Upon being freed from prison, Jamil Al Amin made hajj and subsequently established a Muslim community in Atlanta, Georgia.   The Muslims were active in riding the community of drugs, prostitution, and other social ills impacting  the community.  Unfortunately, Imam  Jamil Al Amin would be charged of a crime based upon trumped up evidence. Not only did another man confess to the crime he was charged with, but the individual who identified Imam Jamil Al Amin as the culprit, stated he was pressured to do so by the police and later he  recanted his story. There is significant evidence of a conspiracy to persecute Imam Al-Amin for his political activities.  Read more about his campaign here: http://imamjamilactionnetwork.weebly.com/ and  send Imam Jamil Al Amin, letters of support here:

Kamau Sadiki

Kamau Sadiki  was a member of the Black Panther Party for Self Defense. One of his duties involved working in the Free Breakfast Program to feed hungry children prior to attending school.  Kamau is spoken about in the autobiography of Assata Shakur,” One of the first things that Kamau and i had discussed was Islam. He had been a Muslim for some time and was deep into it.  He was seriously trying to convince me to convert and become a practicing, active Muslim. I had always said that if I had any religion, it was Islam but I never practiced it.”     Following the liberation of Assata Shakur from prison,  Kamau Sadiki was approached by authorities and told he would ‘die in prison’ unless he worked with  authorities in their efforts to apprehend  Assata Shakur. He has since been incarcerated. Read more about his story here : http://freekamau.com/ and write Ramadan letters of support here:

Sekou  Odinga

Sekou  Odinga was a member of the Organization of Afro-American unity,  an organization that Malcolm X established.  After the assassination of Malcolm X, Odinga became disillusioned and joined the Black Panther Party for Self Defense.  However, a government program known as COINTELLPRO  would work night and day to disrupt, and dismantle black political organizations forcing members to go underground. In order to  extract information about Assata Shakur’s escape, Odinga states he was brutally tortured,.  Odinga  further indicates that governmental authorities sought to manipulate the case in order to give him the maximum sentence, “They called the liberation of Assata Shakur kidnapping because jail-breaking was not a federal charge.” After serving 30  long years in prison, Sekou Odinga would be paroled, still strong in his Islamic faith,”I believe that al-Islam as taught by the Koran and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad(A.S) is the best organized system to free new Afrikan people and build the New Afrikan Nation.”   Though Sekou Odinga is no longer in prison, he receives no social security and maintains  a living through speaking engagements. You can invite him to speak at your Mosque, Church, College, Community center..etc by contacting him here, and you can donate to him here  http://www.sekouodinga.com/

Jalil Abdul Muntaqin

Jalil Abdul Muntaqin was determined to bring about social change at a very early age. In high-school,  Abdul Muntaqin’ joined the NAACP at the height of the civil rights movement and became a leading figure in the Black Student Union at his high-school. However, after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, Abdul Muntaqin became convinced that white supremacy in America needed to be directly confronted with the organizational power of the Black Panther Party for Self Defense.   Just a few months prior to his 20th birthday, Abdul Muntaqin was arrested for his activities in the Black Panther party, where he has been a politcal prisoner ever since for 32 years.  While entering prison, Jalil Abdul  Muntaqin described himself as an avowed Marxist.  While in jail Muntaqin met H.Rap Brown  later known as Imam Jamil Al Amin and other Black Muslim leaders, and observed their daily prayers. At first, Muntaqin could not understand why he would pray to a God but after 6 months of debate and discussion, Muntaqin took shahada.  Even in prison,  Muntaqim has continued activism by filing numerous lawsuits for the rights of prisoners.
