Rejuvenated from Hajj: Black Muslims in Mecca!

Rejuvenated from Hajj: Black Muslims in Mecca! September 15, 2016

Malcolm X was the former National Spokesman for the Honorable Elijah Muhammad and the minister of Mosque #7 in Harlem, New York.  Malcolm X’s pilgrimage to Mecca convinced him that a firm belief in tahwuid(God’s oneness) was the cure to the racial ills that plagued America.Malcolm X writes,

“Never have I witnessed such sincere hospitality and overwhelming spirit of true brotherhood as is practiced by people of all colors and races here in this ancient Holy Land, the home of Abraham, Muhammad and all the other Prophets of the Holy Scriptures.”

Malcolm writes  that his pilgrimage had a profound impact upon his own worldview, “we were all participating in the same ritual, displaying a spirit of unity and brotherhood that my experiences in America had led me to believe never could exist between the white and non-white.”  With his new spiritual insights, Malcolm X declares, ”I am now striving to live the life of a true Sunni Muslim.” Unfortunately, with  anti-black racial prejudices plaguing Muslim communities, Malcolm X’s vision of Muslims being the ones who worked to eradicate racism in America is in jeopardy.Malcolm X truly believed that Islam could work to eradicate racism in society. We have a duty to carry out these ideals into practice.
