I don’t own any copy of the Bible that’s particularly enjoyable to read.  I have a massive study edition from my days in Directed Studies, that’s much too heavy to carry anywhere casually.  I could use any number of online Bible websites, but it’s hard for me to give the text the kind of focus I’d like when I’m in a context I don’t use for long, focused reading.  The place where I’m most likely to encounter scripture in a format... Read more

Since I was on holiday in Ireland, I prorogued picking my next Saint for the month until now, and, this time, I drew a familiar face: John the Baptist. I knew this saint from before my conversion (unlike poor Blessed Scammacca who I’d never heard of before drawing him from Jen’s generator), and he’s already helped me out once.  When I was on College Jeopardy, one of the categories in the first round was “New Testament Places” and I deliberately... Read more

— 1 —   My favorite part of my trip to Ireland avec ma mère occurred on our last full day when we visited Kilmainham Gaol, a prison built in the Benthamite style and used to incarcerate (and execute) many of Ireland’s most famous political prisoners.  As you can see above, the panopticon design of one of the prison’s wings lets guards observe all of the prisoners as easily as possible. The museum and tour were excellent.  I wish I’d gone... Read more

While I’m on vacation in Ireland, I’ve invited Unequally Yoked readers to assemble a wunderkammer of guest posts on books, practices, ideas, etc that particularly delight them.  Claire began this series with her post on prayers following communion, K.Chen followed on the virtues of YouTube covers, Ben Conroy talked about how stories enchant us, and today’s post is from James D. Miller, an associate professor of economics at Smith College and the author of Singularity Rising. Mankind is going to become a lot smarter... Read more

Tonight, I’ll be out in Donnybrook to give a talk, hosted by The Irish Catholic on “Having Better Fights about Religion.”  If you don’t have time to make it to Dublin, it looks like the talk is going to be livestreamed through iCatholic (7pm in Dublin), and I’ll post a link to the video (presuming it exists) after the fact. Earlier this week, I also sat down with Michael Nugent of Atheist Ireland for a casual chat (which turned out to run... Read more

Anyone observing the human race for any length of time would very quickly conclude that most people are... Read more

While I’m on vacation in Ireland, I’ve invited Unequally Yoked readers to assemble a wunderkammer of guest posts on books, practices, ideas, etc that particularly delight them.  The first entry is from Claire, who usually blogs at Laughing Joyously. Prostrate I adore Thee, Deity unseen, Who Thy glory hidest ‘neath these shadows mean; Lo, to Thee surrendered, my whole heart is bowed, Tranced as it beholds Thee, shrined within the cloud. From St. Thomas Aquinas’ Eucharistic hymn Adoro te devote... Read more
