We are doing a scripture study together: reading along through some scriptures and discussing the passages. I’ve started with the Isha Upanishad. I have a translation of the Upanishads done by Eknath Easwaran, a teacher whom I deeply trust and love. In this book there is an introduction before each translation with some insight from Easwaran. Here is a link to the Amazon page for the book I have: However, today I am going to use a different translation. Thanks... Read more

Each month Patheos offers its bloggers books that they can read for free and review. Even though most of them are Christian, including this one, I requested it because it is about a struggle with infertility. As Brad and I are about to embark on the journey towards potential parenthood, this book seemed very relevant for us. There’s no reason to think that we will have trouble conceiving, but it’s always a possibility and so I thought it would be... Read more

I hear this dichotamy a lot. This idea that women who have children later did so because they were working on building their career. Now, I find it great that people, that women, find careers that they are passionate about and love. There’s nothing wrong to me about waiting to have children until your career is established. But that isn’t the only way that a delay in family starting happens. I am not one of these women. I sacrificed everything... Read more

Several weeks ago I tried to start experimenting with potential ways to wear the dupatta that goes with my lengha for my wedding. I found that the dupatta was extremely heavy and would not stay on my head. So I bought a new one, a light weight “belly dancer” scarf from Ebay. Much better! Now I can wear the dupatta that came with the lengha to drape around my body and this one for over my head. Let’s try those... Read more

Since I mentioned Vyasa yesterday for Guru Purnima, I thought I would tell you a little more about him today! Guru Purnima is also called Vyasa Purnima and is said to be both his birthday and the day he arranged the Vedas into four parts. Vyasa is a famous figure from Hindu history. He is a sage who is said to have composed great Indian epic The Mahabharata (in which The Bhagavad Gita appears). He was also a character within... Read more

On Saturday our Sathya Sai Baba group had a presentation for Guru Purnima, a day like father’s day, set aside to reflect on and honor the guru in our lives. (Here is a very detailed essay on the details of the holiday and its meaning). A young woman in our group put together a lovely slideshow encouraging us to discuss such questions as do we need a guru (I’ve asked that before!), how do we find a guru, what do... Read more

When I was a kid hearing about how we are born into our lives in order to purify our souls, burn off karmic consequences, and grow closer to enlightenment, I wanted to start work on that immediately. Some people think that a belief in reincarnation would make someone complacent, feeling like they have all the time in the world to deal with problems. Not for me! I felt from a very young age how short this life is and I... Read more

I can understand now why wedding TV shows film the last week or two before the wedding. That’s when the stress is really happening as everything starts to come together. We are four weeks out now and so all the things that I waited to do have to get done now! The time has really flown by. Already Done -Venue in place -Menu decided -Decor selected -Contract with videographer -Photographer selected -Wedding outfits purchased -Wedding jewelry purchased -Invitations sent and... Read more

Indra is the king of the Gods and in the same tier as Agni. I look at it as Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva are tier one, then there is a tier of Gods below them that are the ancient Vedic Gods like Agni and Indra. I’m not sure where Ganesha falls in, though, since he is probably the most worshiped of any God, yet is not part of the trinity! Maybe he is tier 1.5. Indra was very important in... Read more
