Orris root is most certainly an occult classic, but is actually two different species of iris, Iris pallida, and Iris germanica. Orris root is an herb of the moon, used for dream work and astral flight, as it is a great protection root as well. Burning Orris Root incense creates a truly peaceful and focused environment, making it easier to connect with one’s fetch or spiritual self. Orris Root has a long history in spiritual practices, its zenful scent and grounding properties make it perfection for meditation.
For myself though, I adore it with divination practices. I use it before readings or scryings as a wash, and then burn it during the sessions. For it is believed to enhance psychic abilities, and its energy can help to open the third eye chakra, associated with intuition and spiritual insight. Orris Root can also be used in ritual practices to create a sacred space. Sprinkling Orris Root powder around an altar or magickal workspace can give aid to purifying and protecting the space. It can also be added to bath water as a bath tea, or as I mentioned as a ritual wash to cleanse the body in preparation for spiritual practices. I just recently added such a bath tea for a fall wildcraft at Raven’s Hedge. Orris root, essential oils, and some herbs and resins of the moon.
Orris root is also thought of by some as an herb of Venus, and in Hoodoo magick it is used in love spells. Powdering the roots can then be used to blow at the one you desire, or sprinkled upon one’s self to aid in safe hedge flight. It has been used as a scent since ancient Greece times, and I add Orris root to some of my body oil blends to add a sweetness that’s often compared to violets. Enjoy!
