Janine Turner Speaks Out Against the HHS Mandate

Janine Turner Speaks Out Against the HHS Mandate April 10, 2012

A few weeks ago, I noted that to many women, the HHS Mandate is demeaning. In that post, I shared a video where Gloria Purvis gave a talk that many of you saw, shared, and promptly helped make go viral.

Today, I will share more thoughts from another woman who is stating flatly that Move On.org doesn’t speak for her on this issue. The thoughts are from actress Janine Turner, who I had totally lost track of after Northern Exposure, where she played the plucky Maggie O’Connell, went off the air. Ditto after the mountainside thriller she made with Sylvester Stallone hit the theaters, and left.

Yep, 1993 was a long time ago. But my college career was rapidly coming to a close then, see, and the real world, with all the attendant responsibilities (expenses!) that go along with starting a new career (after having been a Marine for a decade), etc., eclipsed virtually everything else in my life. I mean, I had to get a job(!), and I knew my priorities, so keeping up with movies, television, and the careers of actors and actresses (never a big priority for me anyway) got put on the back burner, where they belong.

Dr. Joel Fleischman (Rob Morrow) and Maggie O'Connell

Fast forward to 2012, and Janine Turner shows up as a blip on my radar screen again. Not so much as an actress this time (though she seems to stays busy), but as a radio talk show host who blogs. She also heads a group called Constituting America. I hear she is a frequent guest over on Fox News too. Some things never change though, which means I don’t ever listen to talk radio, podcasts, watch Fox news, etc. No time. But I do check in over at my Twitter feed from time to time, and a few months back I started following Janine Turner.

Long story, short, she posted something a fortnight ago that is shocking to no one. That is, unless they are still kidding themselves that people are stuck in monolithic voting blocks that all move together (without thinking) in the same direction, like schools of fish, or flocks of starlings. In groups that political scientists used to think moved together en masse in the same direction inevitably. You know, like “the Catholic voting bloc” or “the female vote”, the whole time playing down the fact that women, just like men, can hold varying opinions among themselves from across the entire spectrum, and (shock!) not every woman necessarily speaks for all women.

Here’s what Turner said that caught my attention,

Women have come a long way since women’s suffrage and the ratification of the nineteenth amendment in 1920. The emergence of the women’s voice, women’s ingenuity and women’s intellect has been chiseled from the stoic stones of yesterday’s heroines. The evolution of liberty has been an interesting trajectory and the path varied for many Americans. Yet, upon the platform of our founding fathers’ ideas, based on Mosaic Laws and Christian principles, liberty has continued to grow, adapt and advance.

Women, who were once pigeon-holed and restricted by men who had the upper hand in society, are now a challenge in the colleges, a match in the marketplace, and a force with which to be reckoned in the culture. Yet, the prodigy of the suffragettes, who banded together to parade across the Brooklyn Bridge with baby strollers, are now facing a new type of attack. Hysteria versus reason kindled by the liberal, leftist phony war on women.

A perfectly reasonable and rational resistance of the Catholic Church against a government mandate that infringes upon their religious freedom, a basic American tenant, has been hi-jacked by the liberals and twisted into a lie. A radical violation of the First Amendment has taken place and the Obama Administration and the liberals, realizing their mistake, quickly did what they do best – spin. Desperate to win the women’s vote in 2012, they created a fictitious Republican War on Women.

This message has been manipulated, massaged and manufactured through the media. Though it feels like old news, it is not, and it will be the signature song of the Democratic Party.

Read the rest over at her blog. But wait, there’s more!

Before you head over there, do me a favor and check in at Deacon Greg Kandra’s place and read his post on what has become of the main stream media. Deacon Greg’s opinion is worth knowing because broadcast journalism is where he spent the bulk of his career. It’s where he won several Peabody and Emmy awards to boot. In other words, the Deacon knows what he’s talking about when he says,

The mainstream media is increasingly diminishing itself into irrelevance and giving more and more of us fewer and fewer reasons to pay attention.  As one who toiled long and hard in the vineyards of broadcast news, I find this stuff infuriating, and more than a little depressing.  The nation needs a strong, vigilant, independent and courageous press.

What we’re getting, instead, is lazy reporting, cynical manipulation and lies.

Caveat emptor.
