Hurry up and wait. All Marines know that phrase well. And folks hate waiting. It makes us uneasy. It makes us confront our powerlessness. It reminds us that we aren’t in charge, and we hate being reminded of that.
So, while the Holy Spirit has us right where He wants us (look how many times the word “wait” comes up in the scriptures!), I’ve scrounged up a few tunes that you might find hit the nail on the head on this waiting business. Consider them your earworms over the next several days, if not the next several hours.
Carly Simon, Anticipation. A classic that just keeps getting better. Remember when they used this in a Heinz ketchup commercial? It’s a lot like that now. This is Carly, live from Martha’s Vineyard back in 1987.
“I’m no prophet and I don’t know nature’s ways…”
Tom Petty, The Waiting. It’s absolutely impossible to do a music post about waiting without including Tom Petty. The dude knows.
“The waiting is the hardest part
Every day you see one more card”
The Clash, Street Parade. Unwritten rule #273: There is always a place for a song by the Clash in a Music for Mondays post.
http://youtu.be/AwHnH0jhb8U“I was in this place
By the first church of the city
I saw tears on the face
The face of a visionary…”
Flaming Lips, Waiting for Superman (Is It Gettin’ Heavy?) The title speaks volumes, because in a way, the Pope is like Superman.
http://youtu.be/JY_L1AzSmhU“Tell everybody waiting for Superman
That they should hold on as best they can…”
Green Day, Wake Me Up When September Ends. Alternative lyric for the chorus!
“Wake me up, when the Conclave ends…”
Alison Krauss & Gillian Welch, I’ll Fly Away. From the O Brother Where Art Thou sound track, the good stuff is always worth waiting for, you see.
“Just a few more weary days and then,
I’ll fly away…”
Josh Groban bonus track! How the Holy Spirit works: Josh picking someone out of the audience randomly to sing a duet with. And the crowd goes wild!
