Very good news, especially for viewers left out in the cold like me. See, the folks at the local PBS affiliate let me down in my area (“Do what? We ain’t never heard of such a show”). Well, they tried to sound more intelligent than that but they completely missed the boat on the greatest documentary mini-series to hit the small screen since Ken Burn’s The Civil War. Thank God my cable provider carries EWTN, which will premier Catholicism on... Read more

The other day, during my commute home from work, I heard a catchy tune that mentioned St. Joan of Arc (the patroness of this blog) in the lyrics. I thought to myself, I should put that in the next MfM post. Then a friend posted another song about Joan on her Facebook page yesterday and I got to work in earnest. (more…) Read more

There are other ways to Occupy Wall Street, you know. As owners in the boardroom. I’ve shared thoughts along these lines by folks like John Bogle, founder of the Vanguard Group of Investment Companies. He argues, and pretty convincingly, that the problem for a long time now is that a heretical form of capitalism, managers capitalism, has risen to prominence. (more…) Read more

I had someone leave a comment on a post who lamented questioningly, “After all, do Christians proselytize to others as they wish others would proselytize to them? The very notion is ridiculous.” Below is a great video clip, courtesy of Kevin O’Brien’s Theater of the Word, Incorporated, that puts that statement to the test. Because we are called to spread the Good News in ways that appeal to all people. (more…) Read more

That’s right. I’m referring to the post I wrote yesterday about why you need to call the police if you run into a Penn State situation in your parish. I don’t know how it is in your diocese, but in mine, when signing my children up for Religious Education classes, Youth Group activities, etc., all of the sign up forms have sad little liability waivers built into them now. They say, in a nutshell, “you can’t sue us.” (more…) Read more

Back in March of 2010, when the sexual abuse scandal in the Church got its second wind, I wrote a post where I said if any of us knew of abuse of this nature occurring, we should “call the cops. Serious people with guns and badges looking for bad guys tend to get things done a little quicker than the average bureaucracy.” (more…) Read more

—Feast of St. Martin of Tours On this feast day of St. Martin of Tours, I came upon this delightful poem penned by Father Charles L. O’Donnell. It is an account of Martin’s charitable act of giving a beggar half of his cloak. As it turned out, Martin would have a dream that the beggar was in fact Our Lord. (more…) Read more

11:11 on 11/11/11?! And the Full Moon is tonight too? “Release the Kraken!” Heh. And you thought the Mayan Calendar was something to fear. St. Martin of Tours, pray for us. Read more

A poem by Margaret Atwood. Confess: it’s my profession that alarms you. This is why few people ask me to dinner, though Lord knows I don’t go out of my way to be scary. I wear dresses of sensible cut and unalarming shades of beige, I smell of lavender and go to the hairdresser’s: no prophetess mane of mine, complete with snakes, will frighten the youngsters.
