Brave words from a brave woman who happens to be my blog neighbor from the Muslim Channel. Here name is Nancy Shehata, and thanks be to God, hear her roar, Yesterday, U.S. Ambassador to Libya J. Christopher Stevens and three of his staff were killed by RPG fire as they tried to leave their embassy.  The crowd outside the embassy there, and another unruly mob outside the U.S. Embassy in Cairo, were puffed up into a froth by a video,... Read more

Prayers for the repose of the soul of Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens, and for the souls of the others killed in the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya. God of the spirits and of all flesh,
who have trampled death and annihilated the devil
and given life to your world, may you yourself, O Lord, grant to the soul of your deceased servants
J. Christopher Stevens and companions, rest in a place of light, a verdant place,
a place of freshness,... Read more

Which points out to me that though he (perhaps) will be perceived as being on the right/correct side of history, he’ll still be just another casualty in the train wreck of relativism. All the world’s major religions, with their emphasis on love, compassion, patience, tolerance, and forgiveness can and do promote inner values. But the reality of the world today is that grounding ethics in religion is no longer adequate. This is why I am increasingly convinced that the... Read more

And it’s all through a partnership between the Vatican’s publishing house and Apple Inc. The Vatican has teamed up with Apple to develop new hi-tech methods for communicating the works of Pope Benedict XVI to the world. “It represents an enormous step on the international stage because, as you know, internet goes beyond space and time,” said Father Giuseppe Costa, the director of the Vatican’s publishing house Libreria Editrice Vaticana. I came pretty close to spending an entire lifetime on planet Earth without knowing that it’s Our Mother’s birthday today. The painting above reflects this event from the perspective of a contemporary Russian artist named Vasili Nesterenko, who painted this in the year of Our Lord, 2002. Here’s a little something else I found in the old Roman Breviary over on the YIMCatholic Bookshelf. Genealogists might get a kick out of it. (more…) Read more

You know how some things are just so obvious that you figure everyone will “get” a joke? Comedians (not me, as I would likely starve if I had to make folks laugh for money) make their living on being able to size up situations that we all encounter, and then present them in ways to help us see the humor in them. A poem by Kenhelm Digby Best, priest of the Oratory of St. Philip Neri, London, 1900.  Fraternal Correction Ah! there are untamed spirits, rough and rude, Rugged as unwrought iron, unsubdued Till fire hath filled it with a glowing heat— And love alone with such souls can compete. But, soon as love hath made these souls less like Their wretched self, some deem it time to strike— Unskilful smiths! they only beat the mass Into its own cold hardness—while, alas!... Read more

Proof abounds that the Democratic Party nowadays is not your father’s (or your grandfather’s) Democratic Party. If a picture is worth a thousand words, here’s one that has eighty-two bonus words to boot. Whoa, Frank. That letter was penned pre-World War Two, brother. Everyone with a brain knows that things are vastly different nowadays. Deacon Greg was just posting something about God and the Democrats, as did Catholic Vote. So what does any of this have to do with the... Read more

“No amount of piety in leisure hours can compensate for slipshod labor on the job. But any honest task, well done, can be turned into a prayer.” —Archbishop Fulton Sheen In the United States, the first Monday of September is a federal holiday celebrating the contributions and dignity of workers. Nothing gets done without them! But on this day we stretch the weekend out a little longer, wrap up our summers, and have one last barbecue. And here, since its... Read more
