Those Crazy Catholics… March 6, 2008

I was just looking up St. Patrick’s day today to help me figure out when my father’s birthday is (I’m not so good with dates, I know he was born on whichever day isn’t St. Patrick’s day – the 16th or 17th – which didn’t thwart his good Irish mum from naming him, yup, Patrick), when I discovered that the Catholic Church has changed the date of St. Patrick’s day this year!

Apparently it conflicts with Easter, and we just can’t have commemoration of Jesus sneaking out of a cave and ungodly amounts of green beer on the same day – I guess. Personally I think there may be some irony in mixing mass intoxication and resurrection. I suppose some folks in Rome and elsewhere don’t see the humor in it. Others, however, are going ahead with the March 17th celebrations, such as those in New York City, Dublin Ireland, and Butte Montana.

According to Wikipedia this is nothing new. They changed it back in 1940 too, and, not to worry, it’ll be back to March 17th again next year and again into the future for a bit.

Such is life. It’s mostly sunny, or just partly cloudy, or whatever, so I should get out there.
