How Do You Flu?

Does your house look like this?

Most of the builders have been fighting the not very lovely flu that is sweeping the country. Kat pointed out that we may even be cyber-contagious! It has been over 4 years since we’ve had the flu and I found that I wasn’t terribly prepared. Half a bottle of kids ibuprofen, boxed chicken stock, and some juice left over from soccer season were all I had to combat the virus. I had to send my mother in law to buy more kleenex, medicine, cough drops, and drinks and leave them on our porch so we wouldn’t pass it to her. What do you have around your house in case of 2 weeks of sickness? I don’t really like things sitting around expiring from not been used, but it sure would have been nice to have all the ingredients for chicken noodle soup on hand!

    We always have Oscillococcinum on hand. They have them at any drug store for adults, and sometimes the children’s version too. I got our children’s version at Whole Foods. They are crystals- taste like sugar- and the kids don’t mind taking it. It really seems to help the symptoms.

    Oh no! In my area, we have several bugs floating about – in addition to the flu – including a really bad stomach bug. I went out a few weeks ago with a list including gatorade, chicken broth, noodles, soup veggies, motrin (both children’s and adult), tylenol (both children’s and adult), pedialyte ice pops, toilet paper, tissues, clorox wipes, hand sanitizer, juice boxes, freezer convenience foods just in case the adults aren’t up to cooking and paper plates (who wants to do dishes during the flu!). We haven’t used them yet . . . praying we make it through without the whole house infecting.

      Great thoughts! I am making a list now! One of the things I had to ask my mother in law to pick up was more hand sanitizer. We went through a TON in those 2 weeks! When I am 8.5 months pregnant I buy the most outrageously big thing of paper plates that Costco sells and give myself permission to use them for as long as they hold out to not have to do dishes for awhile. This makes total sense to do when sick, too. I will stock up!

    I always try to have Fresh ginger, lemon and raw honey for a great immune booster tea. The kids like it too! In the winter I also Try to always have frozen homemade chicken stock in the freezer and I give the kids elderberry syrup every morning to also boost their immune system. I find these things really help when we are sick. And I cut out all dairy and grains when sick. Thankfully this seems to be working for us so far!

      Also great ideas. You can freeze ginger, so I had some but didn’t think of using it. I agree with the no dairy, too. Do you give kids the elderberry (we’ve used Sambucus) all the time or just when they are sick?

    Lysol! We seem to be worse hit by stomach bugs than anything else, but I have found that if I start right away spraying everything with Lysol when someone is sick, and isolating that person as much as possible, we can keep it more contained. I am still not over the six weeks when we all passed the noro virus around our house, over and over again, but that was when the doctor told me to arm myself with lysol, and we have never had an episode that bad again.

    Also, clorox wipes and, sorry to say it, clean toilets are a gift to the family when something is going around.

    I do think that when you tend to cook from scratch, you are underprepared for emergencies. I love the idea of paper plates – it takes one burden off of whoever is caring for the family during the illness.

    Also, this is the time when I feel like my kids have had so little screen time all year that we can just watch TV for about a week without any guilt.

      Yes, as I shared earlier, this will definitely be part of my post party clean up plan from now on so hopefully we can prevent rather than react! We has just had 4 big parties, so I had no meal plan for the coming week…it was supposed to be my time to regroup, so we were really scraping the bottom of the barrel until my MIL brought in reinforcements!

    Probiotics to help the body fight it. Do you have access to a whole chicken and can boil your own broth–it is much more nutritious and healthy than boxed. Good luck!

    I know this is not helpful now, but do you get flu shots? I always make sure everyone in my family gets the shot, and we’ve never gotten the flu. Even if you do catch it, you’ll have a much more mild case if you’ve been vaccinated.

    In the winter I give them a teaspoon of elderberry everyday and two a day when sick. I buy the syrup but I’m going to purchase the berries next time and make it myself bc it is so expensive. A friend just made elderberry gummies with some extra gelatin she had!

    We watch a lot of movies ;-) I usually make chicken soup every other week in the winter, so chances are pretty good that I will have the ingredients on hand when someone starts getting sick.

    We also drink a lot of tea. My kids make it themselves, which is great!

    Red, please share your chicken soup recipe

      Simple Chicken Soup –

      1 whole organic/free range chicken
      1t to 1 T salt
      5 Carrots
      5 Stalks celery
      1 large onion
      2 cloves garlic
      (optional 1 bunch kale, 1 turnip, 1 parsnip, box noodles or 1 cup rice)
      Boil chicken for 4-6 hours in large pot filled with water. Strain broth, pull all meat off bones and set aside. Discard skin and bones. (Optional — Puree any meat from organs and put back in broth.) Dice veggies (I use a food processor). Add veggies to soup. Allow to simmer for about 20 minutes. Add pasta/rice/potatoes. Simmer for 20-40 more minutes. Add meat back into soup. Add salt to taste.
