Top 7 Bible Verses To Pray Over Your Spouse

Top 7 Bible Verses To Pray Over Your Spouse February 11, 2015

Praying over your spouse is not only a necessity, but it is also a privilege. God loves us so much, and he loves to hear our hearts for our loved ones. Praying Scripture over them is a wonderful way to bless our husband or wife, because it speaks prophetically over them. Our desire for our spouses should be like what God spoke over the children of Israel in this verse, “I will bless them and the places surrounding my hill. I will send down showers in season; there will be showers of blessing” (Ezekiel 34:26). Following are my top seven verses to pray over your spouse.

PEACE – Numbers 6:24 “The LORD bless you and keep you…”

Since we love our spouses, we want them to be blessed in every way. This verse in Numbers is the beginning of a blessing that the Lord told Moses and Aaron to pray over the Israelites, and it is a wonderful way to start praying God’s peace, blessings and favor over our loved ones as well. The following verses include additional blessings saying, “the LORD make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD turn his face toward you and give you peace” (Numbers 6:25-26). Safety and provision are also important, so those are included here as well. Who doesn’t want peace and these other blessings over their loved one? I know that I do, and it a joy to pray these blessings over my spouse.

COURAGE – Joshua 1:9 “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Praying for your spouse should also include a large dose of strength and courage as expressed in this verse. We all face trials and challenges on a daily basis, so to pray for these over our loved ones will be a blessing to them. Many family members and spouses can let fear or discouragement overtake them, so this verse is a great one to pray to combat those emotions. God wants all of us to be full of strength and bravery—knowing that God is with us at all times.

PROTECTION – Psalm 91:15 “He will call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him.”

This whole Psalm is a wonderful prayer to speak over our spouse, because it asks the Lord for protection, deliverance and salvation from anything that would come against them. As we place our loved one under “the shadow of the Almighty,” and we put our trust in him, God says that he will save them from sickness, terrors at night, and anyone that would come against them during the day. The Lord even says that he will command his angels to guard over them, and that no harm will befall your husband or wife. Like it says in this verse, if we call upon the Lord for our spouses, he will answer us, and grant our spouses honor and a long life.

PROSPERITY – Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Isn’t it exciting to read and know that God has great plans for us? This verse is often spoken over graduates and young people ready to embark on a new adventure in life, but I think that it is a perfect verse to pray over a spouse as well. God does want to prosper our loved ones with hope and a future, especially if they seek after him with their whole heart. The Lord says that he will be found, so we want our spouse to have the joy and confidence of knowing and understanding these truths. The following verses continue the thought by stating, “Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart” (Jeremiah 29:12-13). God is so good to his people, and he wants to encourage us with great hope.

Bible Verses To Pray Over Your Spouse

PURPOSE – Romans 8:28 “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

It is great to know that even when we face hard times that God has our back. This is certainly a prayer we should offer on behalf of our husbands or wives, because we want any trials that come their way to be turned into blessings for them. There is definitely power in praying these words over our loved ones, as they are called according to God’s purposes.

REJOICE – Philippians 4:4 “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!”

Joy is another blessing that we should pray over our spouse, as this will turn the routine of each day into something extraordinary. When we can see things through the Lord’s eyes, then we can be joy-filled in spite of the difficulties and circumstances of daily life. This is a great verse because the Lord repeats it twice, so I believe that he wants our lives to be filled with rejoicing no matter what comes our way. How much more fun is it to be able to laugh at things that happen in our lives with our spouse?

THANKSGIVING – Philippians 4:6 “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”

My final choice for verses to pray over our spouse is this one, because God wants our loved ones to put aside anxiety and in its place give our requests to him. Focusing our thoughts on things that are good, true, pure and right, will fill our mind and heart with hope and all that is encouraging and positive. This will lead to gratitude filling our hearts, and then the Lord explains that peace will fill our minds as well.

CONCLUSION:

If we are Christians and we love our spouses, then we are called to pray for them on a daily basis. Our prayers will not only bless them, but will also speak prophetic words of peace, courage, protection, prosperity, purpose, joy and gratitude over our loved one. The apostle Paul states in I Corinthians 13:13, “And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.” So a great way to show love to our husband or wife is to pray these verses of blessings over them.
