Top 7 Bible Verses About Being Lonely

Everyone feels lonely and alone at some point, as they pass through difficult times and seasons in their lives. The good news as Christians is that we don’t have to suffer through those moments on our own. The Lord has given us his word to comfort and sustain us even in the darkest hours. As David wrote in Psalm 23:4, “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”

Keeping this in mind, here are my top 7 Bible verses about being lonely.

Psalm 25:16 “Turn to me and be gracious to me, for I am lonely and afflicted.” 

From being the runt of the family and shepherd boy to becoming the most persecuted king of Israel, the psalmist David knew about loneliness and hardships. He had spent many a night in the fields by himself, and during that time he had found his comfort in the Lord. As he writes in this verse, he is calling upon God to be gracious and compassionate to him, because he is feeling lonely and afflicted. He knew from experience that the Lord would hear his cries for help.

Psalm 42:11 “Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God.” 

Whenever we are feeling lonely and afraid, discouragement can quickly set in as well. Here in this verse, the psalmist is berating and exhorting himself to leave his inner turmoil behind. He is encouraging himself to put his hope in God, because he knows that the Lord is his salvation. The book of Psalms is full of songs and poems that David wrote, because he also knew that praising and singing to the Lord would help him overcome his loneliness and sorrows.

Psalm 102:7 “I lie awake; I am like a lonely sparrow on the housetop.”

How many times have you laid awake at night with too many cares and troubles on your mind? During those dark, quiet hours when silence is your only companion, it is easy to feel “lonely like a sparrow on the housetop,” and yet it is during those times that the Lord is often nearest to us. Only when the world is silent around us can we truly hear God’s voice whispering to us and comforting us.

John 8:29 “And he who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to him.”

Jesus is talking to his disciples in this passage, and he is explaining that since God the Father sent him to earth, that he is also always with him. Jesus goes on to share that God has not left him alone. This is also true for us, because even when we are feeling lonely or afraid, the Lord is always with us. God always has our best interests in mind.

John 14:27 “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.”

I chose this verse as one of my top 7 about being lonely, because it pertains to the heart of the matter. When we are feeling sad or alone, what we really are craving is inner peace. A person can be alone without feeling lonely or afraid, but this can only exist when the Lord gives us his peace that passes understanding. He wants to calm our hearts and take away those feelings of loneliness and despair that are so common in the world today.

John 16:32 “Behold, the hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home, and will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me.”

Jesus is talking to his disciples here about his upcoming death, and he predicts that they will all abandon him in his hour of need. But even though they will be scattered, Jesus reassures them that God the Father is always with him. Once again, this rings true for all of us, as we are never really alone—the Father is always with us. And we can receive his comfort when we seek him in prayer.

I Timothy 5:5 “She who is truly a widow, left all alone, has set her hope on God and continues in supplications and prayers night and day…”

We often think of widows and orphans as being the loneliest people, since their loved ones have passed away. In this verse, the apostle Paul is encouraging Timothy to honor and respect widows, but he also explains that many widows have learned to set their hope on God. They have found peace by lifting their prayers and supplications to the Lord at all times. I find that this is a very encouraging word for anyone experiencing loneliness, fear, and other struggles.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, as long as we are living here on this earth, we will experience hardships and loneliness. The Lord is faithful, though, and he is always present to bring us hope and peace even during our darkest hours. His word, The Bible, is full of encouragement and life, and we can have direct access to the Father through prayer as well. God is so good!
