Why Are So Many Preoccupied With Angels?

There are Internet sites, books, and magazines about angels, so what’s up with the preoccupation about angels, including so-called guardian angels?

Messengers of God

The Hebrew word used for angel is “mal’ak” and means “messenger” or “representative,” while in the New Testament Greek, the word angel comes from “aggelos” and means “a messenger” or “envoy,” and “one who is sent,” so angels in the Bible are basically messengers of God and represent God, as when they came to rescue Lot and his family from Sodom’s coming destruction. Angels are envoys or messengers of God and they are His representatives, so that is one of the duties angels perform. The Apostle John received “The revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show to his servants the things that must soon take place. He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John” (Rev 1:1). Mary, Elizabeth, Joseph, many others received messages from angels, and even at the tomb, an angel announced, “Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen; he is not here. See the place where they laid him” (Mark 16:6).

Protectors from God

God may also send angels to miraculously protect or rescue those who are crying out to Him. One example is the angel of the Lord who kept Adam and Eve from going back into the Garden of Eden, something God must have seen as necessary, perhaps because Adam and Eve wanted to return. The psalmist wrote, “The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them” (Psalm 34:7), and if necessary, God “will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways” (Psalm 91:11), so even if “A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand…it will not come near you. You will only look with your eyes and see the recompense of the wicked” (Psalm 91:7-8). In the Book of Daniel, God “sent his angel and delivered his servants, who trusted in him, and set aside the king’s command, and yielded up their bodies rather than serve and worship any god except their own God” (Dan 3:28). Daniel told King Nebuchadnezzar, “My God sent his angel and shut the lions’ mouths, and they have not harmed me, because I was found blameless before him; and also before you, O king, I have done no harm” (Dan 6:22). Clearly, one of the duties of angels is for protection.

Angel-Statue

Ministers of God

After Jesus had been tempted by the Devil in the wilderness, and after a forty-day fast, He must have been severely weakened, at least physically, so what happened after perhaps the greatest battle of temptation ever? Mark 1:13 records that Jesus “was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. And he was with the wild animals, and the angels were ministering to him.” On another occasion, Jesus prayed three times, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done” (Luke 22:42), and right after that, “there appeared to him an angel from heaven, strengthening him” (Luke 22:43), so angels are ministering spirits, sent to Jesus in this case, but also for us. It doesn’t matter if we see them or not…they are there. The author of Hebrews writes, “Of the angels he says, “He makes his angels winds, and his ministers a flame of fire” (Heb 1:7). Clearly, angels are messengers of God, angels are protectors from God (when needed), and angels are ministering spirits sent to minister, to Jesus Himself, but they also minister to us, so why do we get so wrapped up in angels, almost as if worshipping them? I visited one elderly ladies home (a shut-in) and it was full of every angel image, statue, picture, and knickknack you could imagine. There were angel coffee cups, plates, placemats, and table lamps. You could not look anywhere in this woman’s house and not find an angel image. I asked her why she had so many angels in her home and she said, “I feel protected with them surrounding me.” Sadly, these were images or icons of angels, and not the real thing, and I wondered why angels protecting her superseded the fact that the Bible says there is protection in God alone, although He may involve angels (Psalm 91).

Worshipping Angels

People have been worshipping angels for thousands of years, which to me is a mystery. Why would anyone worship angels and not their Creator? This was nothing new to the Apostle Paul who wrote, “Let no one disqualify you, insisting on asceticism and worship of angels, going on in detail about visions, puffed up without reason by his sensuous mind” (Col 2:18). The Bible says angels are worshippers…worshipping God 24/7 (Heb 1:6; Rev 7:11). Angels do not allow us to worship them as we read in the Book of Revelation, where John writes, “I, John, am the one who heard and saw these things. And when I heard and saw them, I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who showed them to me, but he said to me, “You must not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers the prophets, and with those who keep the words of this book. Worship God” (Rev 22:8-9). Since we are commanded to only worship God and not angels, why do so many seem preoccupied, some even obsessed, with angels? What is it about them that draw worshippers when the one true God is not worshipped?

Conclusion

I remember reading a story of a family who constantly prayed to their “guardian angel,” even though the Bible doesn’t specifically say we have guardian angels. It didn’t matter to this family…they prayed to angels, worshipped angels, and focused solely on angels, but all to the detriment of true worship, which should be reserved only for God. Human nature seems to seek encounters of the supernatural kind, and angels are certainly that, but for those who elevate angels above and beyond worshipping Christ, they are making angels an idol, and idolatry, in whatever form, breaks the commandment to God. We ought to worship alongside the angels of God to give glory to God and the Son of God, Jesus Christ. That’s where true worship is, because you cannot worship God unless it is in truth and spirit (John 4:24).

You live in a delusional fantasy world of non stop make believe and infantile wish thinking.

There is as much evidence for “angels” as there is for “god”, “jesus”, bigfoot and alien abductions. EXACTLY the same amount of real world evidence…NONE!

There is NO evidence for any of the 10,000 “gods” postulated by delusional men through the ages, NO evidence for any “jesus”, NO evidence for anything supernatural including “angels”, “demons” “satan” “hell” “heaven” “miracles” “resurrection” or ANYTHING you ramble on about. The BOOK that you worship is a STORY BOOK~ written by no name religious lunatics that contains NO truths whatsoever. Everything in it can be shown to be FALSE!

Do you understand this? There is NO evidence for ANYTHING you “believe” and babble about…NONE, ZERO, NADA!

That means that you and those like you are willfully delusional, credulous as a small child, infantile in your thinking, lacking any critical thinking skills, defiant in your denial of what is actually TRUE and gullible beyond words.

You need to grow up jack. You are not a child so you need to stop thinking and believing like one.

    • HM8432

Yet, here you are. I like atheists, they tend to disproportionately talk about the God they supposedly don’t believe in. They keep people talking about and discussing God, thus, keeping His memory alive. Great work, “non-believers!”

      • pud

You need to work on your reading comprehension….We rational people do not talk about any “god” that we don’t “believe” in….we talk about you lunatics who do “believe” in absurdities

        • Ivlia Blackburn

To misquote, me thinks you do protest to much

  • pud

On a side note jack…I have a good friend living in Jeddah Saudi Arabia…he has 2 young daughters. One of them turned 12 and was no longer allowed at a “water park” because she is considered “rape ready”. The muslim lunatics you urge your christian lunatics to “love” ban a 12 year old girl because she is now eligible to be raped by any savage muslim who feels like it. My friends wife cannot drive and his kids are virtual prisoners to the islamic death cult who worships the SAME invisible “god” you do!! Demonstrate that muslims are wrong and that you’re right…LOL Fat chance of that ever happening as you both are apocalyptic death cults of varying degrees of lunacy! This is why and how religion poisons everything! To think you make your measly living promoting crap like this….

    • cengforfreedom1

Muslims do not worship a “God of Love.” “They believe Allah’s love is
based on “conditional performance and/or divine decree. In Islamic
theology, much like Buddhist philosophy, the concept of love seems to be
primarily that of “mercy.” It is more impersonal than personal. The
concept of the (Judeo-Christian Johovah) God’s love is foreign to Islamic
thinking because of extreme emphasis placed on Allah’s sovereign power
and transcendence.” – “The Facts on Islam” by John Ankerberg” The Bible says clearly “GOD IS LOVE – “The one who does not love does not know God, for GOD IS LOVE.” I John 4:8.

“I know men, and I tell you that Jesus Christ is not a man. Superficial
minds see a resemblance between Christ and the founders of empires and
the gods of other religions. That resemblance does not exist. There is
between Christianity and every other religion the distance of infinity.” Napoleon Bonaparte.

      • pud

        The “god of love”….LOL

Any question why I’m so certain you’re all lunatics?

God kills 70,000 innocent people because David ordered a census of the people (1 Chronicles 21).

God also orders the destruction of 60 cities so that the Israelites can live there. He orders the killing of all the men, women, and children of each city, and the looting of all of value (Deuteronomy 3). He orders another attack and the killing of all the living creatures of the city: men and women, young, and old, as well as oxen sheep, and asses (Joshua 6). In Judges 21 He orders the murder of all the people of Jabesh-gilead, except for the virgin girls who were taken to be forcibly raped and married. When they wanted more virgins, God told them to hide alongside the road and when they saw a girl they liked, kidnap her and forcibly rape her and make her your wife!

Just about every other page in the Old Testament has God killing somebody! In 2 Kings 10:18-27, God orders the murder of all the worshipers of a different god in their very own church! In total God kills 371,186 people directly and orders another 1,862,265 people murdered

The God of the Bible also allows slavery, including selling your own daughter as a sex slave (Exodus 21:1-11), child abuse (Judges 11:29-40 & Isaiah 13:16), and bashing babies against rocks (Hosea 13:16 & Psalms 137:9). This type of criminal behavior should shock any moral person.

Murder, rape, pillage, plunder, slavery, and child abuse can not be justified by saying that some god says it’s OK. If more people would actually sit down and read the Bible there would be a lot more atheists like myself. Jesus also promoted the idea that all men should castrate themselves to go to heaven: For there are eunuchs, that were so born from their mother’s womb: and there are eunuchs, that were made eunuchs by men: and there are eunuchs, that made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven’s sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it (Matthew 19:12). I don’t know why anyone would follow the teachings of someone who literally tells all men to cut off their privates.

The God of the Bible also was a big fan of ritual human sacrifice and animal sacrifice.

The Lord loves the smell of burnt offerings in the morning!! You might enjoy checking out some people called the Stylites – high rise living for the dedicated religious fanatic.

            Smells like…..victory

          • Ivlia Blackburn

Smells like someone living in a flat/apartment above a bakery or early morning cafe.

          • Judgeforyourself37

“God” may love the “smell of burnt offerings,” but your neighbors will complain if you were to burn that roast on your grill at six in the morning. Just some sarcasm, levity to some folks who can’t laugh at themselves.

          • Sam Andrew

Always make sure to conduct burnt offerings in a well ventilated area and ensure you have a working smoke alarm and fire extinguisher!

        • “Murder, rape, pillage, slavery and child abuse cannot be justified by saying the some god says it’s OK.”

Agreed, yet there are some religious fanatics (who frequently comment on this blog), who think it’s okay if the text says God commanded it. It’s the text that’s the problem. It justifies immoral behaviour.

          • pud

Good people will do good things…bad people will do bad things…if you want good people to do bad things it takes religion.

Sadly, huge swaths of this nation are filled with blindly indoctrinated wish thinking low intelligence gullible people spurred on in their delusions by misguided preachers like jack and herd mentality. They do not ever arrive at their world views through critical thinking but through indoctrination and blind obedience to authority figures and popular narratives like religious cults. No sane person when taken aside could look you in the eye and honestly say that they believe as true the talking snake, global flood and invisible jesus human sacrifice. Only in groups are they able to repress their rationality in favor of the tribal cult doctrines

          • Ivlia Blackburn

Which is probably why it was written as such because written as it is their actions are now justified. If they blame their actions on God, who can’t really answer back given that those accusing him of something are the same ones leaving the ‘evidence’ for posterity and are hardly likely to admit their wrongs, then their actions are suddenly justified. I suspect this is the main reason between the God of the Old Testament and the God of the New Testament. In the Old Testament certain behaviour was ‘acceptable’ according to the times, in the Roman empire of the New Testament it wasn’t as acceptable. And who is to say that todays behaviour in many things will be acceptable in 2000 years time.

“Love” dummy is a CONCEPT. “CONCEPTS” do not exist. Therefore your statement that “god is love” implies that your “god” is a concept and does not exist. CONCEPTS like love do not act on existing objects, cannot be measured, have no shape or substance and therefore do not exist. You cannot put a pound of “love” on the table or measure out a pint of it…it is a CONCEPT just like your invisible “god” thingy. CONCEPTS cannot affect the real world, create universes, lift a hammer, run a mile or write a stupid reply. The statement that “god is love” is just about as mindless a declaration as anyone could make

PS..Who cares what the buybull says? Why should anyone care one bit what any “holy” book says?

What you should be concerned about is “IS IT TRUE”? That is the pursuit of a rational mind not mindless acceptance of some ancient text because someone else told you that a “god” dictated it. A “god” supposedly dictated every “holy” book…hello?

        • Judgeforyourself37

Please remember that there “are many roads to the top of the mountain.”

The worship of angels, veneration of saints, and in the case of the Eastern Orthodox Church the veneration of icons (which lead to some bloody episodes in the Byzantine Empire) has been a fairly consistent trend in Christian history. Catholics and Orthodox response is often to absorb such beliefs into their tradition, essentially legitimizing and Christianising folk/pagan religious practices. Protestant denominations seem to have a bigger problem with integrating these practices as it undermines their biblical focus. Yet the fact these beliefs keep cropping up in different ways is interesting, obviously it is fulfilling a spiritual need that is not being met in the usual day to day practices that are encouraged.

    • pud

There is no such thing as “spiritual need” as there is no such thing as “spirit”…it’s a man made woo woo word that allows the credulous and gullible to justify their insane beliefs

      • Sam Andrew

Well even if not ‘spiritual’ in the sense of an actual spirit, undoubtedly people have a desire to feel connected and loved by something larger than themselves (in terms of evolution likely a tribe and specific ‘home’ nomadic zone ref. indigenous peoples concept of belonging to a landscape seems very primal) and a psychological need to feel in control – i.e. sense of agency – that manifests itself, i think in belief in angels and such things, it gives them a feeling of belonging and control that is more down to earth than confessional religion. Spiritual is just the most common terminology for this kind of drive, not that everyone manifests it that is.

      • Kristie Richardson-Mobley

You sure spend a lot of time and energy bitching about something you do not believe in? So I assume you believe we somehow evolved. So since we 100% do know that we cannot exist without a sperm and a egg how did we come about to begin with? and we 100% do know that we come into the world as a helpless infant,so who took care of the this first human as it lie there as a helpless infant?,or did we evolve as a adult outside of a womb(we need a womb now) male and female so we then could come together and create the rest of us humans,,and did we lie there and our bones and muscles evolve first and then our internal organs,,how does that work exactly? another thing who built your home you live in or the car you drive? well logic says someone did,,so as a human the most complicated species in the world had no creator or designer right? only things like houses and cars need a creator is that it? Lets not forget the millions of animals and plant life in the world that somehow just randomly over millions of years came about, and all male and female to their own specific species,,because we no logically if we left a pile of wood for a million years it would never just become a house right? Why don’t you attempt to use that brain in your head, its in there right? I cant see it,I am not 100% sure it is,you don’t even realize you have faith, more faith then a believer in God,because I could never believe in such illogical thinking as you

        • pud

You are pathetic. I rail against your sick evil cult and your indoctrination of children. I told you in another reply that I do not “believe” anything. I follow where the empirical evidence leads like all intelligent rational people do.

We didn’t “somehow” evolve…We evolved and are still evolving…duh!

There was no “first human” stupid just like there was no first mouse or first elephant or no moment in time where you went from a child to a man. All of life is a continuum.

You clearly are not very intelligent and most certainly uneducated.

Anyone who substitutes MAGIC (which is what you propose your deity uses) for their lack of understanding and unwillingness to study the FACTS is an imbecile.

          That would be you.

scientists say we all have one mother, nicknamed Eve, though there seem to be various fathers. So who was the mother of Eve, if she was the mother of the rest of humanity? She must have come from somewhere. Oh sorry, maybe she was an alien from Mars.

          • pud

This is why you people are so dangerous…you hear something and then run with it without knowing what you’re talking about. “Mitocondrial” Eve…look it up…a genetic mother from a time when the human population was down to only a few thousand. Imagine a population with 10 breeding women left…9 die off..that leaves one to be the genetic mother of all future humanity…duh! She wasn’t the first woman dummy. Don’t be stupid ..google is your friend. Use it!

          • Judgeforyourself37

Always insulting, why? Yes, Google is your friend, but it is not always 100% correct. Certainly there never was an “Adam or an Eve” Granted there was never “one woman who was a breeding mare” in order for the population to continue growing. State facts, they will enhance knowledge, whereas, nasty comments and insults do nothing to enhance knowledge or depart information.

          • pud

It certainly would be magic if the clone of a male were to be a female! In any case, think of the prodigious amount of incest needed to populate the world, not only after Eden, but after Noah’s flood also, which portrays Yahweh as a mass murderer into the bargain. How scientific all of this magic is!

          • Judgeforyourself37

Yes, you are correct, we evolved and are continuing to evolve. I, too, am a firm believer in Evolution and Darwin. However, you could have stated that in a way that did not call the other person, who posted her opinion, “stupid.” You disagree with her, as do I, but why resort to name calling? Do you insult everyone with whom you disagree?

A “pile of wood” is not an animate biological entity capable of self replication and change stupid. In case you didn’t know, houses don’t procreate and create little out houses that grow up to repeat the process! Houses are NOT biological, they are not alive, they are made from inanimate material, they don’t reproduce, they don’t have DNA, they are NOT natural subject to the laws of nature. This is pure infantile thinking on your part…arguments from ignorance, simple minded nonsense. Go back into your comma and read some more Ray Comfort. That’s your speed obviously

        • David Cromie

The only person ‘bitching’ here is you, as you stupidly attack those that do not believe in magic, or the myth of creationism/ID. Please provide the falsifiable evidence for the existence of your favourite supposed ‘god’, and then you might have something intelligent and factual to contribute.

          • Kristie Richardson-Mobley

Stupidly???? LOL… seriously that is your supposed intellectual response to me.It would do know good to show you any evidence, you have already made up your mind,,you know that organic mush in your head that somehow knows right from wrong, how to love, feel sad, feel compassion, feel guilt, feel pleasure,,look in the mirror,,there is your proof,,try hard to use that thing in your head,it maybe painful for you but give it a try

          • David Cromie

Your intellectual response to my question would clear up my ‘stupid’ allegation, once and for all. Give it a try!

          • Kaz

            Look, a corpse.

  • Is there any more evidence for angels than for fairies? None that I know of! Isn’t it more likely that stories of angels are simply mythology? They might fulfil a spiritual need, but would not compassion, healing mercy and loving kindness fulfil such a need more?

  • Judgeforyourself37

I do not know about the “angels” in your life. In my life I have had “angels.” They were the people who have helped and emotionally supported me throughout my life. Some of these “angels” were relatives, most were friends. I hope that, in some way, I helped them too when they needed emotional support.
Now and then, because I am old, I think of the departed people who were in my life, and sometimes I mentally “ask” them for strength.
My vision of “God” is an energy source, an information field, upon which we call call on for strength. This same energy source is around each of us and in each of us to guide, direct and strengthen us. Sometimes, especially when life is smooth, we forget the strength of this energy within us. Sometimes in times of despair we forget that strength that is within us and we need to remind ourselves, that “God”/energy source is right there, within us to give us the strength we need, when we need it the most.

  • Charles Winter

The angels and saints of the monotheistic religions correspond to the subordinate gods of the polytheists. For example, the warrior archangel Michael corresponds to Ares/Mars/Teu. the messenger Gabriel corresponds to Hermes/Mercury/Odin; guardian angels correspond to the Roman household gods the Lares.

  • David Cromie

It is rather sad that anyone would believe in supernatural entities, for which there is no irrefutable evidence, in the 21st cent. CE! One might as well believe that Harry Potter is a real person.
