Oh, baby: Jacob and Isabella top names for 2010

And once again, popular culture  — not saints or family tradition — is playing a big role.

From the New York Daily News:

What’s in a name? A nationwide obsession with “Twilight,” Teen Mom and celebrities, it seems.

The most popular baby names of 2010 are Jacob and Isabella – both lead characters in the hit romantic vampire novels-turned-movie.

The names topped the charts for the second year in a row, the Social Security Administration revealed yesterday.

Jayden, one of Britney Spears’ sons, is the fourth favorite name in the U.S.

And the nation’s fascination with reality television has propelled Maci and Bentley, the mom and son characters from the hit show “Teen Mom,” to become the fastest trending names.

“‘Teen Mom’ is the winner of this year’s baby name wars,” said Laura Wattenberg, creator of babynamewizard.com.

“It’s amazing to think that one teenage girl and her baby are changing America’s baby names.”

Other favorites for boys include Ethan, Michael and William.

Sophia, Emma and Olivia are among the most popular for girls.

Kellan, the name shared by the “Twilight” actor Kellan Lutz who plays Emmett Cullen, has also surged in popularity. It’s the second-biggest trending boys’ name.

  1. William seemed to be on the way out until a prince received that name.

  2. Trendy names are as bad as trendy tattoos, except at least with the tattoo no innocent parties are involved.

  3. Re. trendy names-my name -Theresa-was a very trendy Catholic name for girls in the mid 1960’s. I love the Little Flower though and wanted her real name Therese to be my daughter’s middle name. My daughter’s first name Zoe is getting more trendy much to our dismay as we watch it move up the list but it IS a saint’s name-there were actually 2 saints name Zoe and it’s meaning in Greek of “life” honors her birth mother in China who allowed her to live. Still I am hoping her name stops creeping up the list.

  4. Philippa – not even in the top 1000 names over the last 130 years.

I would wager that name, along with Catherine, gets on the list in the next few months and years due to a certain sister of the Duchess of Cambridge.

Of course we must hope the parents won’t just name the poor girl “Pippa”

  5. Regina J. Faighes says:

At least Jacob is a Biblical name.

  6. pagansister says:

Isabella is back as a girls name, in this case due to the movies, but it was the name of my husband’s grandmother. Old becomes new again, with names as well as clothes!
