Mary survives: the statues that made it through Harvey

Besides widespread damage from flooding and winds, Hurricane Harvey, which swept through Houston this weekend, also caused several fires in its wake.

The Roja family had to evacuate their home on their land west of Corpus Christi as Harvey approached, and were devastated to learn that it had been destroyed by fire, CNN reported.

But there were two things that were left intact: statues of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

“Some blame God and others blame the hurricane, but the only thing left standing here were holy things,” Natali Rojas told CNN affiliate KRIS. “As you can see this statue is the only one that survived.”

She found both a large statue of the Virgin Mary and a smaller statue the size of her hand.

“I dug around here looking for things and all I found was the Virgin Mary.”

“Throughout my life I’ve suffered a lot…we’re trying to show other families how to stay strong, how to believe in God, and keep everybody together as a family,” said Jesus Rojas, Natali’s father.

Jesus added that they were grateful for the work of the local fire department who battled the blaze even as the hurricane approached.

Natali said she was grateful her family evacuated, and that the Virgin Mary was a sign of hope for her family amid the devastation.
