Rumor Mill: Is Paul McCartney Converting to Judaism?

According to the National Enquirer (roll your eyes all you want, but they were totally right about John Edwards), Paul McCartney has told friends that he is planning to convert to Judaism at the behest of his new bride, Nancy Shevell. Nancy is a New York socialite and the cousin of Barbara Walters, and unlike previous wife Heather Mills she has the approval of McCartney’s children – daughter Stella designed Nancy’s wedding dress.

While I looooove the idea of having a Jewish Beatle, here are two reasons I think this may not happen:

  1. Paul’s first wife, Linda Eastman McCartney, was also Jewish. If he didn’t convert for her, why convert for Nancy? Linda wasn’t particularly religious while Nancy is more observant, so that could have something to do with it. If they’re planning to have kids (Nancy doesn’t have any children, while Paul’s a dad to five), that could explain the desire to convert, but I’m still not buying the urgency.
  2. If Paul were going to convert, it probably should have happened before the wedding. He and Nancy wed on October 1o in a civil ceremony. It’s possible that she required him to be at a certain point in his studies before going through with the wedding, but it seems dubious.

That said, I’d love to have a Jewish Beatle, if only technically. Think of the cheesy remade versions of Beatles songs to incorporate references to kugel and Hanukkah!

On the National Enquirer topic, when they reported earlier about Sarah Palin having an affair with an NBA player, my conservative/tea party friends (who crucified John Edwards) were all saying, “Oh it’s the National Enquirer, therefore…” until I kindly reminded them that NE broke the John Edwards story…you just never know.

In the interest of full disclosure…I belong to neither party, in fact, I hate them both.

I’d believe it if they were having kids, but honestly I’m kind of creeped out by the idea of Paul McCartney having more children at his age. Even if she got pregnant NOW, the infant would have a seventy-year-old father. SEVENTY. You know how old my grandma was when the youngest of her grandchildren was born? Sixty-one.

He’s still my favorite Beatle, though.

Fwiw, my Bubby was 43 when I was born, but that was Back in the U.S.S.R.

    Nancy is 51.
She has a son. Now in college.

Yes! And even if she didn’t have a son, I think she’s past the point of having more. They might want to introduce Beatrice to Judaism (if Satan aka HM doesn’t mind). But he might just be thinking more of spiritual matters & Judaism might appeal with it’s focus on spirituality in daily life.

I think when Paul married Linda Eastman neither were thinking much about organized religion. The majority of Jews aren’t very religious. Perhaps they married in a civil ceremony so they could later have a Jewish wedding. Although any reform rabbi would have married them regardless of Paul’s official affiliation. And, Orthodox Jews don’t even recognize conversion. Perhaps he’s thinking of spiritual matters at his age & Nancy has shared things about Judaism that appeal.

Orthodox Jews recognize conversions, just not those officiated by a non-Orthodox Rabbi.

Orthodox Jews certainly DO recognize conversion. Where do you get these ideas??

    Two questions:

    1. Is McCartney circumsized?
    2. Will Adam Sandler have to add him to The Hanukkah Song?
