Rumour — with a “u” please

I found the following note from the Canadian branch of Warner Brothers in my e-mail inbox this morning:

Please remember that RUMOUR HAS IT… will be opening across Canada on December 25th!
Please note that we are using the Canadian spelling of “Rumour” in Canada & we’d appreciate it if you would suppourt the Canadian message.

Cute. So this is a “message” movie now, eh? FWIW, I did notice the different spelling in the ads when I went down to Los Angeles last weekend. And now that I have a digital camera, I just might go out and take a picture of our Canadian ads and amend this post later today or tomorrow for a little compare-and-contrast.

FWIW, the only other American film I can think of that had a different title in Canada recently was Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (2001), known in the United States — and only in the United States — as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Hmmm, and that was a Warner film too, come to think of it…

And while we’re on a typographical note, consider too that this is the second Rob Reiner film, following When Harry Met Sally… (1989), to bear a title that ends with an ellipsis. That film is one of my top ten favorites of all time. But the early reviews indicate that this new film will probably come nowhere close.
