In response to my post “A Reverend No More,” a friend asked me on Facebook what I meant by “I’ve come to a sacramental way of thinking.” The question is completely legitimate. I’ve tried to figure out how to explain my thoughts and actions. The only way I could without boring the world with deep theological terms is by talking about two of my favorite things: baseball and comic books. First, I know at first glance baseball doesn’t fit with... Read more

A disclaimer before I start. I’m not a woman.  So, it’s safe to say I have no idea what it means to be a woman. Yes, I read Jane Austen, but that’s about as close as I get to exploring my feminine side.  I make this statement because  I’m about to give my opinion on a woman’s issue. That fills me with fear and trembling as I have no wish to be sexist or condescending.  I’m not claiming any moral... Read more

Holy Week has often been a time when people renew their faith, join the church, or change old ways of doing things. For me, this week involves all of the above. Eleven years ago, I was ordained in the Presbyterian Church in America. I took vows that I would uphold the doctrines, peace and purity of the church. I carried those vows over into the Evangelical Presbyterian Church about five years ago. These vows included the charge that if I... Read more

Today, we have our first ever person induction into the Justice Rogues Gallery. It’s my pleasure to introduce Jessica Kristie, writer and Modern Day Abolitionist. She has written a novel, Barbed-Wire Butterflies and all the royalties goes to the organization, Courage Worldwide. Jessica graciously agreed to do an interview for us. What motivated you to get into the Modern Day Abolition movement? I believe the cause found me. I sat down one day to brainstorm and start gathering ideas for a novel when... Read more

In my first post at Geek Goes Rogue, I quoted Simon Pegg and what defines a geek. We’re passionate about the things we love. Things have been getting a bit heavy around these here parts, so I thought I would break it up a bit. Here are my top ten favorite writers of all time. Some of them are influences on my own work, some of them I just read for pure pleasure. Many of them have “geeky” connections.  Remember,... Read more

Since I started getting back into comic books, people have asked me my favorite. That is a difficult question to answer, as I have a number of “favorites” for different reasons. For example, I’m a huge Green Lantern fan. As a fiction writer, there’s nothing more appealing than a superhero who can create “objects” by the use of a ring and his pure willed imagination.  I may not fight evil by fiction writing, but I’d like to think so. However,... Read more

The Adventures of G.K. Chesterton and the Penny Dreadfuls Since Geek Goes Rogue started, I’ve been overwhelmed by the response. Geeks of all stripes are coming out of the woodwork and thanking me. I’m really floored by the thank-yous. The comment highlight came from the editor of a major online magazine telling me, “I really admire you and what you’re doing. It’s much needed.” Sorry for the WordPress brag. I don’t include this comment to show how great I am,... Read more

Much to my chagrin, my Rob Bell mini review got sidetracked by the whole “profanity” discussion. While I disagree with the rebukes in regard to my language, I realize a good, learned defense on why “earthy” language in fiction is needed. Especially as my upcoming novel, 3 Gates of the Dead, includes characters who actually curse. I’m guessing it will raise more of a furor than my post on Rob Bell.  To that end, here is why I use earthy... Read more
