Reviewing “Zone One” by Colson Whitehead

Zone OneZone One by Colson Whitehead

My rating: 1 of 5 stars

Well, well. Proof positive that a zombie novel can be made yawningly boring.

Colson Whitehead has all the requisite apocalyptic-survivor-zombie elements but chooses to mash together flashbacks and current action with so much thinking and reflection that he manages to turn it all into bland, grey mush. Or wait … was that my brain after I got done reading this? Even the end, which was supposed to be striking and should have been, was greeted with a shrug by this reader. Stick to World War Z or The Reapers Are the Angels.

Enter Zone One at your own risk … and don’t say I didn’t warn ya!

I disagree with this article all books have a different point of views. Such as how people perceives Zombies in their lives. It doesn’t always have to be about blood or gore. Zombies can be a personal illness that they have to battle in their life. The infections of Zombies can be the illness trying to kill off your flesh. You are not the person you was before the Zombie attacks the body or try to affects your mind with it. Then you kill of that Zombie with medicine of life health. Scare the demons away with vitality of hope. Smiling all the way when the pains wants to knock you out with the very kill. Then the whole faith and hope of life wins out and all your very Zombies die!

      Hi Consuela! I agree.

That is why I recommended two other books that do a much better job of describing exactly what you are talking about. :-)

This book was just not well written at all to make those points, actually.

I hadn’t heard of The Reapers are the Angels, but it sounds right up my alley. Thanks for the recommendation!

And on a related note, do you have a list of any other end of the world/dystopian novels that you liked? Wading through the crud to find the worthwhile books can be a bit challenging. Thanks again!

Oooo, I never put them together into a list! But I will do so! :-)

Thanks! That would be a great help.

Did you see that I had Apocalypse Week once? And I have a bunch of other books with that tag. Check here. I’ll still work on the list though.
