Revelation 2: First Love

Revelation 2: First Love December 2, 2011

“4 Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first. 5 Consider how far you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first.” -Revelation 2:4-5

Falling in love is easy; staying in love is not. There is often an initial attraction in relationships that naturally fizzles out along the way, whether in dating or in relationship with God.

Despite the positive aspects of the Church at Ephesus, Jesus criticized them for forsaking their first love. The passion that marked their early days as followers of Christ had faded. His challenge? Consider how far you have fallen.

In addition, Jesus called them to repent, or to change their way of living. Rather than instructing them to do something new, he commanded them to return to start, reboot, and recommit their full energies to serving him.

We are all prone to the same condition. If you find yourself faltering in your passion for Jesus, don’t continue in a half-hearted pursuit of faith. Stop, change, and return to your original love for God.
