Deuteronomy 18: Don’t Copy

Deuteronomy 18: Don’t Copy August 24, 2012

“When you enter the land the Lord your God is giving you, do not learn to imitate the detestable ways of the nations there.” -Deuteronomy 18:9

In our day, plagiarism is a bad word. To copy someone’s work, whether in film, writing, science, or otherwise, presents an ethical problem that receives serious consequences when a person is caught.

When it comes to worship, God offers similar advice: don’t copy. The nations surrounding Israel worshiped other gods, practiced spellcasting, spoke with spirits of the dead, and bowed to other gods. These actions were prohibited from those who worshiped the Lord. The very first of the Ten Commandments made clear there was only one God who is to be worshiped.

Today, many find supernatural activity found in ghosts, witchcraft, or palm reading fascinating. But for the Christian, these practices are incompatible with God’s commands for worship. Still today, in these areas, the same advice remains: don’t copy. Worship the God of the Bible instead.
