Judges 21: Do Not Do As You Wish

Judges 21: Do Not Do As You Wish November 19, 2012

“In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as they saw fit.” -Judges 21:25

The book of Judges appropriately ends with the words, “In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as they saw fit.” This phrase offers an important explanation for many of the brutal and sinful acts included in its pages.

But these words also offer insight for today. When we do as we wish, or “live and let live” as is often quoted today, disaster results. A nation must turn its hearts to God as well as support leaders at all levels who honor the Lord. The lack of godliness in a culture is the recipe for eventual decline and doom, not only for Israel, but for any land that pursues selfish priorities.

You and I may not be able to change a country overnight, but we can start with our own hearts and those closest to us. Do not do as you wish. Follow the Lord’s plan and purpose for your life. The way to discover this plan? God’s Word and prayer. Ask. Seek. Find.
