2 Samuel 2: Calling for Peace

2 Samuel 2: Calling for Peace January 10, 2013

26 Abner called out to Joab, “Must the sword devour forever? Don’t you realize that this will end in bitterness? How long before you order your men to stop pursuing their fellow Israelites?” 27 Joab answered, “As surely as God lives, if you had not spoken, the men would have continued pursuing them until morning.” -2 Samuel 2:26-27

In the midst of war, Abner called out for peace. Did it work? On this occasion, it did. Joab answered, “As surely as God lives, if you had not spoken, the men would have continued pursuing them until morning.” Abner’s one act of bravery saved the lives of perhaps thousands of men.

We often forget that calling for peace is the most courageous act we can take. It’s easy to call for revenge, to claim injustice, and to launch an attack. It’s much more difficult to forgive, to call for peace, to lay down weapons.

Today, you are not likely in a military battle, but you will face conflict. Remember Abner. Can you find the strength to call for peace? May God bless you as you seek courage to do the difficult thing, to call for peace in the midst of a troubled world.
