Times are tough, money is tight, unemployment is high and yet… Just in the state of Texas alone more than $2 billion of unclaimed cash and other property is waiting for its rightful owners to claim. All around the country, the figure is more than $32 billion worth of unclaimed property. Much of it is cash from bank accounts that haven’t had any activity in years.
What if you had $100,000, or even a couple of million dollars in a bank account and you didn’t know it? If you didn’t even know about it, the account would be as useless to you as if you didn’t have it at all.
Though you may not have such an unknown account (though obviously many people do), there is very likely some kind of hidden treasure in your own life waiting to be uncovered, or remembered, or more fully appreciated and put to use. Can you think of what it might be?
Perhaps it is a skill that you’ve never taken the time to develop or use. Or maybe that hidden treasure is a person in your life whom you’ve never really taken the time to get to know. Or it could be a challenge that you have not yet had the nerve to tackle. Perhaps it is something you’ve always been meaning to do, but never felt that the time was right.
Does it sound crazy that people would let $32 billion worth of their own property go unclaimed? Yes, of course. And yet isn’t it even more crazy to let the best things in your own life go unclaimed or unappreciated?
Maybe today, the time is right to do that thing you’ve been meaning to do, to make that call to an old friend, to get to know that person who you walk past every day. Maybe now is a good time to step forward and claim your own very special hidden treasures.
