The intent of that book was both to investigate the Gospel evidence in historical context and to present a case for Jesus believing that his own death was atoning. In other words, this was a historical Jesus book — and it was offered in a context where many think anyone thinking their death is atoning is either impossible to demonstrate or beyond belief (for anyone to think his death was atoning).

I explore in the Conclusions how atonement theology developed in the pages of the New Testament. The book, however, is not a complete theology of atonement but a sketch of its historical unfolding in the New Testament.

I believe it all begins with Jesus seeing himself in terms of the passover victim as one who, if one ate and drank his body and blood, would protect them from God’s judgment against sin.
