Morning Prayer

I’m always a bit hesitant about the Morning Prayer. Like most UU churches, our congregation is a collection of Christians, Buddhists, Pagans, Humanists, and a lot of people who are difficult to classify and damned proud of it. These people have widely differing views on prayer and what (or if) it should be. I give Rev. Diana credit for showing that it is possible to pray in a way that is respectful of our many traditions and yet still expresses the yearnings of our hearts.

Here’s the Morning Prayer from today’s service.

Spirit of Life and Love, we do not all see you in the same way or call you by the same name. Some find you in the beauty of Nature, some find you at the core of our beings, and some find you in a kind word or a helping hand. Yet each week we come together, knowing that we need not think alike to love alike.

We are thankful for the Spring, and for the life-giving rains. We are thankful for the freedom to worship in the way we see fit, a freedom we know many do not share. We are thankful for the founders and builders of this Fellowship, and as we have inherited much, we know we must build and grow for the next generation of Denton UUs.

We are concerned with all our families in these uncertain times, even as we recognize that no time is truly certain. We are especially concerned for our ministers, as we know Reverend Bill has a difficult road ahead of him, and Reverend Diana must care for her partner while she also cares for our congregation. May we minister to them, as they have ministered to us.

And now let us join together in a time of silent meditation, contemplation, and prayer.
