“Little Drummer Boy” As You’ve Never Heard It

Is it too early to think about Christmas?

I don’t think so!  And to help get you ready for the season, the a cappella group Pentatonix has just released a new MP3 Christmas album which is a great anthology of holiday classics (O Come, O Come Emmanuel, Angels We Have Heard on High, Carol of the Bells, O Holy Night, and more).

The Arlington, Texa-based a cappella group Pentatonix includes vocalists Scott Hoying, Kirstie Maldonado, Mitch Grassi, Avi Kaplan and Kevin Olusola.  The group won the third season of The Sing-Off on NBC, which brought them a prize of $200,000 plus a recording contract with Sony.  Their earlier albums, PTX Volume 1 and PTX, Vol. 2, have fared well on Billboard’s 200 albums chart.  This newest album, PTXmas, just hit the stands yesterday.

You can download the MP3 of PTXmas here.  And to boost your spirits as we enter the season of shopping and grace, here is their new video of Little Drummer Boy.

A cappella? There’s all kinds of swelling orchestral music behind them!
    Nice though.

Roseanne, All the music you hear is created with their voices. They have a great talent!

I’m flabbergasted! Sorry for my ignorant comment.

I’m thinking that all of it was probably recorded in a studio, where sound quality would be better. All done vocally (or, as Dale said, with their bodies), but not out in the wind.

Roseanne, as Kathy mentioned, the music you hear throughout most of it was vocal beatboxing by one of the group’s members: Kevin “K.O.” Olusola. The video, as it started, tried to show that it was him making the instrumental sounds.

Of course, towards the end of the video we could also hear handclaps and some percussive sounds which may have been foot stomps. The beatboxing and the those claps and stomps likely were dubbed in during production. Perhaps this means, technically, it wasn’t an a cappella performance. But it was still produced solely with the human body and without instruments.

    Absolutely gorgeous!

Here is a link to the group’s official website. It has short bios of the members, as well as additional information.

  • Very nice. I wound up buying it. 🙂

I know they are from Arlington, Tx. Anybody know where it was shot? Is that Fort Worth skyline in the background or Dallas? Filmed near/at Cedar Hill Park maybe? Great location AND performance!

      It’s the Los Angeles skyline
