Loved it! I need to think of a few more, though…

  • Mark, you forgot to include snippets from scientists who have determined the cause of this as “galactic climate change.”

    • I second the nomination by Frank Weathers.

Obama: Re-elect me and, not only will the seas not rise, but I will ensure that our descendents won’t have to worry about galactic collisions either.

Our ruling elite: “Worry not, Andromeda is now on the kill list and a fleet of drones is being sent to eliminate this threat to our peace and security. Any and all galaxies in or around Andromeda of “fighting age” are also obviously up to no good and will likewise be eliminated in this highly targeted action. We can no longer sit idly by while threats of this nature continue to expand and move toward us so all necessary action will be taken to protect our sacred peace and security.”

I think John C. Wright’s “reaction” also qualifies as “cool!”

How long before the propeller heads start claiming this as evidence against an expanding universe?

Given the utter vastness of empty space even *within* a galaxy, I fail to see the problem with two galaxies colliding. Oh sure, there’s an increased probability of stellar collisions and black holes- but that increased possibility is more on the order of going from one in a billion to one in a million. The majority of solar systems are going to come through such a collision relatively unscathed, with just some minor orbital differences.

Well given the estimated date of the collision, there is little for us to worry about. That being said, the main problem with such a collision is that essentially they will represent the end of active star formation for the two galaxies. As the two galaxies merge, tidal forces will eject most of the unused gas and dust into intergalactic space (and quite a few stars as well). The Elliptical galaxy that will be the final result will have very little star formation.

A cool documentary by National Geographic (called Inside the Milky Way) discusses this very issue and has some nifty animations of the collision. I thank God I first got to see the video a couple months back at the Mauna Kea visitor’s center.

  • To be honest, the first thing that came to my mind as I read the list? Mark: because the tribalists refuse to kick out our ruling elite, Ron Paul isn’t able to use sensible strategies to prevent this from happening. 🙂

MSM: Uh. Yeah. Our continued broadcast of “Dancing with Stars.”
