A reader writes:

Would you mind offering a prayer for me and my wife?

I’m very bad at handling stress (my own fault).  Opposed to being patient and understanding with change and other people I typically act out in an un-Christian manner.  All of this finally came to breaking point on February 13th when I had my first night of being unable to sleep.  And that problem has continued to this day.  I think it was first triggered by anxiety; but now I’m struggling with anxiety, insomnia, and depression.  I know I brought this upon myself and I’m doing my best to change my ways.  But my struggles with this have now been affecting my loving wife.  She’s been an amazing gift from God and now she’s been having problems with anxiety too, do to my issues.

Please pray that I can learn from the lesson that God is trying to teach me.  Please pray that my wife’s anxiety and my anxiety, insomnia, and depression will lift.

Father, hear our prayer that your son will be able to return to a healthy sleep pattern, and that he and his wife will be delivered from anxiety and depression and restored to your peace and love through Jesus Christ.  Mother Mary, St. Dymphna and St. Joseph, pray for them. Amen.

I’m taking meds for it but even those meds don’t help too much with the sleeping.

    Many more people suffer from insomnia than we realize. I’ve had bouts of insomnia throughout my life, beginning when I was quite young. And I have no magic cure or “trick” to offer. During those times, I often don’t fall asleep until 4:00 or 5:00 in the morning, if at all. Prayer is a great way to occupy your mind while you’re lying awake–especially the Rosary and other “cyclical” prayers (not sure what the right term is, but prayers that are repeated seem to take up some of the stress and anxiety and put it to a much better use). I’ll say a prayer for this couple, and others who suffer in the same way.

    I usually am tired early in the evening and then wired by 11:00 PM. I’ve found that taking 1 0r 2 mg of melatonin helps make me sleepy. You can find it in the vitamin aisle of Wal-mart, so it is pretty easy to come by. However, it is a hormone and can become addictive if you use it too much, as your body will stop making it naturally if you are constantly ingesting it. I take it just on the nights when I’m too wired to settle down and it helps some. Also, having some white-noise maker like a floor fan running in my bedroom helps me tremendously. Be warned though, it also makes it very easy to drift back to sleep in the morning if you linger too long in bed, so be sure to get up right away when the alarm goes off or you will drift off again :)

    God bless you. Oh boy, have I been in your shoes. Don’t focus too much on the “I brought this on myself” part. You need to heal your body. You probably have a lot of cortisol (stress hormone) in your system right now (your wife too), and that can just lead to a vicious cycle of more anxiety, more insomnia, more cortisol, and round and round. Exercise is very important to get those levels down. Try to avoid artificial light and TV in the evening. I second the melatonin idea too. All these things can help readjust your hormone levels. It’s also interesting to note that it’s actually normal to have a waking period in the middle of the night–we have forgotten this, but in times past it was an expected part of life. Think of monks waking up to sing Matins and Lauds and then going back to bed. Remembering that helps me not to get angry about being awake, which only compounds the problem! I will pray for you….

    Some reasonably safe measures for stress-induced insomnia: Chamomile. Warm milk (whole milk if you haven’t been warned away from it). Vitamins D and B complex if you are deficient. Eliminating diversions that activate the fight-flight response. Cutting back on caffeine (warning- withdrawal syndrome may be severe if you use heavily).
