…and gratitude for citizens of New York who, just like on 9/11 run toward the disaster to try to help instead of looking out for Numero Uno. New Yorkers cultivate a hard-boiled image but when the chips are down, they look out for their own. God bless ’em!

  • In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, reporters were surprised by the very infrequent looting, thieving, selfishness, and so on in the city; the vast majority of people made real efforts to help neighbors and strangers. Stories like that and this one give me hope, because so many doomsday narratives involve the complete break-down of civilization and the assumption that humans are by nature cruel and uncaring.
