Hijacking Selma

Selma was a remarkable moment in American history when Christian conscience and non-violence met racist brutality and, with the help of the Holy Spirit, overcame it.  Every blow struck against the marchers, like every lash across the back of Jesus, only wound up defeating the evil the devil hoped to inflict.  Commemorating it, like commemorating Good Friday, is a testimony to the power of the gospel to defeat the powers of sin and death with the love of Christ.  That’s what Selma is about.

Here’s what Selma is not about.  Selma is not about “abortion rights”, MSNBC.  If you are unclear on the concept, let me introduce you to Dr. Alveda King, who points out that abortion has killed 55 million potential voters.  Her uncle, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who had just a little bit to do with the Selma March, said this about abortion:

“I say today that we as Christians must press on, in the conviction that we are “a colony of heaven,” called to obey God rather than man. Small in number, we must remain big in commitment. We must be too God intoxicated to be “astronomically intimidated.” By our effort and example may God use us, as imperfect vessels that we are, to bring an end to such ancient evils as infanticide, abortion, racism and oppression.” Dr. Alveda C. Steve Greydanus, by the way, has a fine review of the very fine film, “Selma”, that just came out recently. It is hard to believe such things were done in America in my lifetime.

But then again, maybe not so hard to believe:
