Why “Last Days in the Desert” is So Boring

The mark of heresy is that it posits an exciting new Jesus and invariably delivers a dull old idea that is less interesting than the old Jesus of orthodoxy.  Bp. Robert Barron gets that.  Orthodoxy is a vast network of ideas–each one of which has enough TNT to blow a civilization to pieces or power it to the stars–all held in tension.   A mind at play in that vast web of ideas has enough to electrify it to last till eternity.  Heresy is the lazy attempt to pluck one or two idea out of the network and shred that web rather than learn to understand it.  It invariably ends in boredom and monomania.
