Sam Harris wastes everybody’s time… May 10, 2010

…trying to derive a Transcendant Ought from a materialist Is.

A reader sums up the silliness of the chinpuller at HuffPo who think Harris is being deep:

“But the consequences of moral relativism have been disastrous.”

Something that, in one of the weirdest ironies I’ve read in a while, most traditional religions have long since been arguing. Wow. Sometimes it all makes my head spin. Now, of course, the scramble to the top of who gets to say their morality just out of blind luck happens to be the right morality based on science. That ought to be good. My bet: won’t change a thing. Folks will just try to manipulate the data to show their beliefs about morality are the super-duper true beliefs that True (TM) science has proven. (True (TM) Science: noun: science that agrees with me)

Harris should at least be given credit for not being a complete ninny by *extolling* moral relativism as those of his class typically do. But recognizing that the bow of the Titanic is under water an hour after the iceberg has been struck does not qualify you for Mariner of the Year. The rest of his article consists of urging all the passengers to pull grab the nearest railing, pull with all their might, and haul the ship back to the surface as we sail on to New York. He is, like all the New Atheists, an astounding shallow thinker.
