Dan O’Neill, President of Mercy Corps, asks a stinging question August 27, 2011

Why is it that the US media takes a storm (bad as it might be) and beats it to death? Reporters dramatically leaning into the wind and rain … The real news is 12 million souls facing slow death in Somalia, Kenya, Ethiopia.

Um, because our media are self-absorbed narcissists who think the world revolves around them with more force and power than a hurricane revolved around its eye? Because we only care about Africans when it is in the interests of our economic demands or our vain multiculturalist pretensions? Because the deaths of those millions don’t particularly serve the needs of our Empire and so are not important to us?

Happily, organizations like Mercy Corps give us Catholics, who are not citizens of this world but citizens of the Jerusalem that is above a chance to do a corporal work of mercy for those starving millions.
