There's a recent book, unfortunately I've forgotten the title, dealing with religion in the US prior to the Civil War. I recently heard the author interviewed in a Pritzer Military History podcast. Anyhow, one of the things he addressed was the extreme anti Catholicism in the US prior to the Civil War, arguing that this sort of extremism was lessened by the war. Interesting discussion.Whether or not anti Catholicism was in fact lessened as a result of the war, I've heard it pretty convincingly argued that the war had the impact of lessening the influence of the Episcopal Church in the South, and increasing the influence of evangelical religions in that region.
