tired, beautiful and humane

Okay, listen… it’s late, and I’ve had quite a day, and I’m very, very tired. On top of all that, my 13 year old daughter went to her graduation dance simply looking too beautiful, and I haven’t had time to really focus on an intelligent blog entry today. But I have a thought: why can’t we just be humane? Definition please:

humane (hu·mane adj)
1.    showing the better aspects of the human character, especially kindness and compassion
2.    without inflicting any more pain than is necessary
3.    with an emphasis on respect for other people’s views

Can we, like God, suspend judgment, even for a second? I have stories to tell. Maybe tomorrow!

interesting definition of humane- #2- without inflicting any more pain than necessary- Jains wear masks in order not to swallow insects inadvertently, and hire people to sweep the sidewalk before them as they walk (as well as not eating any meat). How much pain is necessary? I’m sure each of us would choose 0% pain in our lives, but helen keller commented wisely on the mountaintop experiences being made sweeter by the time in the valley. Did i already quote helen keller before. oh well, it seems to work. hey, and i came today looking for a joke and a challenge- i wasn’t planning on any thinking! where’s my cookie?

Good point in #2. The “righteous” sometimes think it is their job to provide the valleys for others. Perhaps the notions of being rigteous and humane are not compatible?

A “truly” righteous person absolutely is humane…but can a humane person always be righteous?

    Deuteronomy 16:19
Do not pervert justice or show partiality. Do not accept a bribe, for a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise and twists the words of the righteous.

No one is righteous. No, not even one (Romans 3:10)!

Found this quote below while reading inspirational quotes for body builders and the like (go figure!), but thought it fit perfectly here:

“Without humility there can be no humanity.” – John Buchan, 1875-1940, Scottish Novelist and Politician
