inappropriate tee 5: crazy

I find this cartoon somewhat disturbing. I see myself in it. For those who take religion or their spirituality seriously, you know how true this cartoon is. Religion can lead to craziness. Then craziness ratchets up the crazy. All religious traditions, mysticisms and spiritualities are aware of this danger and advise mentors, masters and directors to prevent this from happening.

You know the story, don’t you?, of how long it took Thomas Merton to finally get his wish to become a hermit. It is for this very reason. You have to be mature enough to recognize crazy when it’s coming and lock the door against it.

I’ve been here. And I’ve had many spiritual directors to help me through it. I’m thankful for every one of them.

That’s presuming I’m not crazy right now. Because that’s another problem with crazy: you don’t know when you are when you are.
