How to support someone who’s having a miscarriage

The Amethyst Network

I just finished reading the second of my required books for getting listed as a loss doula with the Amethyst Network. Miscarriage: Women Sharing From The Heart is a great book for anyone who wants to understand the normal range of emotions around miscarriage, which includes everything from barely noticing the event to feeling painful and traumatic loss. The book is especially validating for mothers who experience powerful grief. One of the women quoted in the book expresses something that … [Read more...]

Celebrating Doulas

20130328-144709.jpg

This is the last day of World Doula Week. Doulas provide physical, emotional, informational, and spiritual support during reproductive experiences.Traditionally that's meant birth, where there's good evidence that continuous support improves birth experiences and outcomes. But increasingly doulas are providing support for all kinds of reproductive experiences, like miscarriage, abortion, adoption, and the postpartum period.Doulas often do very practical tasks, like bringing you water to … [Read more...]

Five Spiritual Practices to do with Children Under Three

Offering Flower Petals to the River, by Kira

By Kira NuitThere's this wonderful stage of parenting, I'm told, where your child(ren) have good levels of cognition, empathy, dexterity, and communication skills. Many things become possible, from watching some of your favorite movies together to doing modest rituals. I have a two year-old; this is not that time. However, there are still spiritual things we can do together, and I think it's important to explore them. I hope to share my spirituality with her during our whole lives (or at … [Read more...]

Creating a Birth Altar, Part 2 (Unexpected Wisdom)

I recently described the birth altar that I created before my last birth. Some of the elements included on the altar came from quotes from a page-a-day calendar from a $1 Shop and some were parts of a t-shirt tag from the tag on a shirt I purchased from WYSH at an LLL conference in 2009 (why keep a t-shirt tag from 2009, you might ask? Because it had lots of cool things written on it! And, behold, it became a source of birth altar wisdom for me. Wisdom lurks in unexpected places!)I am struck … [Read more...]

Creating a Birth Altar, Part 1

Inspired by birth altars created by artist Amy Swagman of The Mandala Journey, I decided I wanted to make a special birth altar for the birth of my daughter. My mom bought me a small, unfinished curio cabinet/shadow box to use for this purpose. The first thing I did was to paint it “placenta red” using a blend of red and purple paints to get the shade I wanted. This is my favorite “power” color.I had a variety of postcards, tags, and inspirational words saved and some of them posted on th … [Read more...]

Placenta Magic

Belly cast from second pregnancy.

...And when you see this wondrous thing That grew me up so well, Say thank you to the Goddess Who made us from one cell...*--Dr. Sarah Buckley, "Ode to My Placenta" I've said for many years now that my favorite color is "placenta red." A deep, rich, life-saturated red. I'm amazed by the placenta. How cool is it that we can grow a whole new organ and then just release it from our bodies when it is no longer needed? Pretty cool. I think the reason the placenta might not get as much … [Read more...]
