Good Morning Patheos!

I am Representative Rebecca Hamilton. I am beginning my 17th year as a member of the Oklahoma House of Representatives. That means I have much more seniority than anyone else in the Oklahoma Legislature.

I was first elected in 1980, served three terms, then left office when I had my first child. Before I was elected, I was an ardent pro abortion activist. I helped found the first abortion clinic in Oklahoma and, during the early 1970s, was the NARAL Director for Oklahoma.

I was re-elected in 2002. I had experienced a powerful religious conversion which changed me concerning issues of life. I had also converted to the Catholic Church. The same people in the same House District who had elected me as a pro-choice advocate graciously re-elected me as a pro-life Catholic.

During the years away from public office I was a full-time, stay at home Mom.

I never planned on blogging. But the HHS Mandate requiring the Catholic Church to violate its moral teachings or face crippling fines, along with the many battles I’ve fought for the sanctity of human life since I returned to office, have changed my mind. Being a Public Catholic is not easy. Its not easy for anyone who takes it seriously. I fear it’s going to become more difficult as time goes by.

I want to add my small voice to the fight and I don’t know any better place to do that than right here at Patheos.

    Looks great Rebecca! :)

      Thank you Mindy!

Looks good Rebecca. I am going to have to reset the ‘follow’ via Google, as it does not seem possible to get it on the old WordPress one. Still, no real problem. Good to see you with a wider audience – your views certainly merit it!

    • Rebecca Hamilton

Jessica it is so good to see you here! Thank you for following me.

Very happy to see you here, Rebecca, and the following works from your old blog and from the ‘feed’ – so I don’t think any of your many followers will be lost :)

        • Rebecca Hamilton

Jessica, I’m the one who set up that link. All by my little technologically inept self. Hopefully, things will be much, much better when the pros get it done. :-)

(Great to see you here, btw.)

I look forward to your wisdom and insight. We definitely live in “interesting” times, times our parents would never have imagined.

    • Rebecca Hamilton

      Thank you John.

Rebecca, the site seems to work well. I am very glad you have become a public catholic and that blogging is a part of that. I appreciate your straight-forward approach to all things political. We can’t leave our ethics and morals behind when we take office if we are to “go into all the world.”

    • Rebecca Hamilton

      True.

Looks good. But I think I’ll mention that I identify with the trauma related to getting a site up and running!

There are so many things to read! I’m still looking forward most of all at what YOU have to say. Do we need to register again, or will it switch over automatically?
Also, I was thinking today after hearing something political about the women’s health campaigning–how is the birth control pill and abortion being handled? I haven’t heard recently. I just don’t think the government should “bite the hand that helps” in legislating hospitals and organizations of faith. They have also disrupted the adoption process. Seems as if freedom of religion has become freedom FROM religion. Keep fighting, Rebecca!

It’s great to see you here! I think you can follow this directly by using the RSS feed on the right hand side of the page. I’m not exactly sure how this will work, but I believe the old site will eventually transfer you here. However, if you want to get a daily feed of what I’m saying, sign up for the RSS.

      Thanks again!

Why did you switch to Patheos?

        • Rebecca Hamilton

I did it because I am hopeful that Patheos will give a wider reach to the things I’m trying to explain with Public Catholic. I guess you could say that I’m on a mission and I hope that Patheos will help me do a better job of fulfilling that mission. On the other hand, I love WordPress. It is a most congenial environment. It’s a tug, leaving it.

Looks good. Got the link updated at my blog so it’ll bring me here when I click ‘Public Catholic’. :D

    • Rebecca Hamilton

Thank you! I’m going to continue getting your blog, since I follow it. I couldn’t do without a daily dose of your beautiful photos.

  • http://www.prhayz.com Noel Williams (prhayz) www.prhayz.com

WOW! What was the force behind your conversion Rebecca? I do not believe in abortion but I think people have a right to do what they want with their bodies.

    • Rebecca Hamilton

Noel, I had one of those knock you down and leave you flat in the middle of the road conversions. It was so powerful that I’ve never doubted from that moment to this that is was real and that God really is God. Abortion is confusing because there are always two people, two lives, involved. But, what changed me was when I finally got it through my thick skull — with the help of the Holy Spirit — that every single abortion kills a living child.

I don’t think you can live out the teachings of Jesus and not be public about it. He didn’t just teach us about private practices but about how we treat others, how we use money, and so on. Thanks for sharing.

    • Rebecca Hamilton

Rachelle, that’s a profound observation. I never though of it that way before.
