Vatican Analyst Warns of Global War Against Christians

Global war cover

John Allen, the respected Vatican analyst, digs into the issue of anti-Christian abuse around the world.

“I don’t think it takes any religious convictions or confessional interests at all to see that defense of persecuted Christians deserves to be the world’s number one human rights priority,” Allen, a noted Vatican journalist and author, told CNA in an Oct. 2

I’m going to order the book and then review it here on Public Catholic. In the meantime, you can read more about it here

I take seriously anything which John Allen writes about. Of course, there have been ample news stories about such persecution, some of it horrific, in recent years. But you pretty much have to read about them on news websites. For reasons unclear to me, such news rarely makes it into broadcast news. Even when an event is widely covered, it gains no traction with the American public.

I think part of the problem is our indifference to international news. Our basic response, if we pay attention at all, is to say “That is horrible! Something needs to be done to stop it! Hmmm…. I wonder what we will have for supper?”

Okay, I understand the feeling of helplessness in affecting change overseas. But we don’t seem to care enough to even try: e.g. talking about the issue with friends and at church, contacting government officials, donating to aid organizations etc.

Yes, but look at the interest awakened, especially among Christians, by the plight of the Muslims of Darfur – just though it is to protest on their behalf – as compared with what was until recently the even worse plight of their Chrisitan neighbours in South Sudan, who have had to fight a major war and force their independence with no international support or attention at all and no weapons except those they took from their persecutors. Were you aware that the longest war in recent times had been fought and won by desperately poor Christian tribesmen against all the odds? No? Nor were 99.999% of the Western public. Something is seriously wrong here.

I was just ready to finalize that letter to Cardinal Dolan on Christian persecution around the world, I’m going to add that quote and reference the book. Great timing on posting this.

Manny, if you don’t mind, if Cardinal Dolan answers you, would you share it here? Also, thank you for doing this.

I will. Now that I think I’ve completed it, would you like me to email you the letter I’m sending him? Perhaps you can give it a quick read and guidence before I send it. I plan to send it this weekend.

I’d love to see it Manny.
