I just missed the last chance to dance. How about you?

The Secular Student Alliance is the best 'chaptering' organization in our movement... by an extremely wide margin. The number of active chapters eclipses any other organization. Their numbers still continue to grow, and they even have groups at military academies, such as West Point. When I started the Military Atheists & Secular Humanists (MASH) movement in January of 2011, I was directly reading from their playbook. I think it's important to have at least one formal group for … [Read more...]

Closeted Atheist Fears Spouse Will Leave Him

Living in fear... When I first came to the conclusion that I no longer accepted any established religion and washed Christianity off my palate I was at a crossroads. I was an agnostic deist when my wife and I exchanged vows and within the first year of marriage I came to the conclusion through my studies (and prayers) that there was no supreme being. My wife, however, had not altered her beliefs. Living in a state of perpetual fear that she would reject me for what I came to believe was … [Read more...]

Military announces ‘Gay Pride Month’

The Army Times ran this AP story last night: WASHINGTON — Last summer, gays in the military dared not acknowledge their sexual orientation. This summer, the Pentagon will salute them, marking June as gay pride month just as it has marked other celebrations honoring racial or ethnic groups. In the latest remarkable sign of change since the military repealed the "don't ask, don't tell" policy, the Defense Department will soon hold its first event to recognize gay and lesbian troops. It comes … [Read more...]

Jessica Ahlquist to speak at Rock Beyond Belief II

If you don't know... Jessica Ahlquist is the brave teenager from Rhode Island who stood up against her school, her town, and her state to get an unconstitutional prayer banner removed from her school that had been standing for 49 years!!! Since she came out to fight for and defend the constitution she has received numerous threats and insults from the religious right but has not waivered in her resolve or backed down in the least. I can honestly say that I don't think I would have been that … [Read more...]

My daughter just doesn’t understand

On the one hand, you have to establish boundaries. On the other hand, if 'caturday' BS exists, I'm allowed to post this stuff about Zoe every once in a while. … [Read more...]

My Christian Tattoo

Why? Prior to my first deployment to Iraq I was still held in the thralls of religion and was questioning it without much in-depth research or analysis. In response I felt like I was sinning for my attempt to step away from God so in an attempt to convince myself that I was still a true believer I went out and got two tattoos on my right forearm. At a time when my cognitive dissonance was at its highest I tried to ignore the rumblings of reason and opted to cling to my errant beliefs in … [Read more...]

Unequally Yoked

So the thing is... Many people assume that since I am an atheist my wife is also an atheist. Nothing could be further from the truth. Now admittedly I am inconsiderate. I'm not too worried about stepping on people's toes but that isn't what makes a marriage work. My wife is a Christian and I am clearly a very active atheist. I've gotten a lot of trolling from some people stating I am going to burn in the eternal pits of hell because of my blatant disregard for any spiritual authority. Sure. … [Read more...]

Proselytizing in Afghanistan

Buddy Jesus wants you to spread the word! This is a pervasive problem within the US Military that I have had a major problem with for many years. The dangers behind this fundamentalist policy can be the actual loss of life to U.S. Servicemembers, many of whom (like myself) are not here to fight a religious battle. www.youtube.com/embed/hy5RnIykfCs? This is a video that was recorded in Afghanistan and shows how the Chaplain was giving them instructions on how to proselytize and what to say … [Read more...]
