Romans 13:5-7

Therefore one must be subject, not only because of wrath but also because of conscience. For the same reason you also pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, busy with this very thing. Pay to all what is due to them — taxes to whom taxes are due, revenue to whom revenue is due, respect to whom respect is due, honor to whom honor is due.

    Dear political right:  PWNED.

Thou dost not, however, have to like any of it.

On the other hand, just to play devil’s advocate, the political right would argue that taxes for certain purposes are not truly “due,” just as I suppose all of us would argue that honor is not necessarily due to certain people.  That said, this is a nice comforting verse for the day before taxes are due.

I believe that Matthew 22:15-22 makes an appropriate Gospel reading, if I may be so bold.

Then the Pharisees went and plotted to entrap him in what he said. So they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, ‘Teacher, we know that you are sincere, and teach the way of God in accordance with truth, and show deference to no one; for you do not regard people with partiality. Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to the emperor, or not?’ But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, ‘Why are you putting me to the test, you hypocrites? Show me the coin used for the tax.’ And they brought him a denarius. Then he said to them, ‘Whose head is this, and whose title?’ They answered, ‘The emperor’s.’ Then he said to them, ‘Give therefore to the emperor the things that are the emperor’s, and to God the things that are God’s.’When they heard this, they were amazed; and they left him and went away.

Of course, just a few verses earlier Paul says that all authority on earth comes from God and slaves should cheerfully obey their masters.  I don’t think Paul genuinely supported the divine right of kings, but that certainly gave them ammo to make the case.  This is a troubling chapter, and it’s hard to figure out how to fit it in with the rest of Paul’s case.
