Takin’ it to the streets

Following after the theme of last week’s “driving” songs, here’s the word on the street.

I know this is where the sidewalk ends …

59th Street Bridge Song (Feeling Groovy),” Simon and Garfunkel
Accidently Kelly Street,” Frente
Across 110th Street,” Bobby Womack
“Alphabet Street,” Prince
Fannin Street,” Tom Waits
In the Streets of Boston,” Dropkick Murphys
Joey’s on the Street Again,” Boomtown Rats
Killermont Street,” Aztec Camera
Moon Over Bourbon Street,” Sting
On Hyndford Street,” Van Morrison
“On My Street,” Hoodoo Gurus
Papa Dance on Olvera Street,” Terry Taylor
“Positively Fourth Street,” Billy Bragg
Street Spirit (Fade Out),” Radiohead
Streets of Baltimore,” Gram Parsons
Streets of Baltimore,” The Little Willies
Streets of Rome,” Rick Elias
Sullivan Street,” Counting Crows
Takin’ It to the Streets,” The Doobie Brothers
These Streets,” Paolo Nutini
Walking Down Your Street,” The Bangles
Where the Streets Have No Name,” U2
Yazoo Street Scandal,” The Band

That list was already way too long, so I’ve filtered out the Springsteen as a separate list:

Does This Bus Stop at 82nd Street?
The E Street Shuffle
Incident on 57th Street
Racing in the Street
Racing in the Street” (Townes Van Zandt)
Streets of Fire
Streets of Philadelphia

The “E Street Shuffle” there is Bruce and his band playing along with The Roots in Denmark. The Roots seem to be able to sit in with anyone on any song, anywhere. The last time I saw them live was in a Germantown schoolyard, as the opening act for President Obama. I really hope to get to see that same tour next year.

Okay, apparently my computer’s search feature hates the word “street.” This took some work…

“The Subway and Hope Street” – from the OST for The Longest Journey (long live Good Old Games!)
“Survival on the Street of Insincerity” – from the first OST for Hellsing (the TV series, not the OVAs, which have terrible soundtracks)

If we were counting artists and not just songs I could add a few with the E Street Band…

10th Avenue Freeze Out – Bruce Springsteen

I hear Bruce has been playing this on his current tour, with a big pause at the line “the Big Man joined the band” so everyone can cheer/shout/cry in memory. Wish I could get to one of those shows…

    This is poetry, kids:

He took a hundred dollars off a slaughterhouse Joe
Bought a brand new Michigan twenty-gauge
Got all liquored up on that roadhouse corn
Shot a hole in the hood of a yellow Corvette,
Hole in the hood of a yellow Corvette

I said, John, John, he’s all gone
Gone to Indiana, ain’t never comin’ home
I said, John, John, he’s all gone

Gone to Indiana, ain’t never comin’ home

Bought a second-hand Nova off a Cuban Chinese
Dyed his hair in the bathroom of a Texaco
With a pawn shop radio quarter past four
He left Waukegan at the slamming of a door
Left Waukegan at the slamming of a door

I said, John, John, he’s all gone

Gone to Indiana, ain’t never comin’ home

I said, John, John, he’s all gone

Gone to Indiana, ain’t never comin’ home

Please don’t link to Townes Van Zandt songs, it takes up too much time. I’ve just spent (I can’t say wasted) the last hour on You Tube listening to him and to others doing covers of his songs.
