Chick-fil-A Biblical Family of the Day

Chick-fil-A president Dan Cathy: “We support biblical families.”

Today’s Chick-fil-A Biblical Family Rule of the Day: Ownership of slave children (Exodus 21:2-4).

When you buy a male Hebrew slave, he shall serve for six years, but in the seventh he shall go out a free person, without debt. If he comes in single, he shall go out single; if he comes in married, then his wife shall go out with him. If his master gives him a wife and she bears him sons or daughters, the wife and her children shall be her master’s and he shall go out alone.

But remember folks, if your neighbour has  a male Hebrew slave, you’re not allowed to covet him.

Ugh! It is as if they knew they didn’t want to do things the way the people around them did, but lacked the imagination to see how things could really be different. I guess the idea was that the male slave had to be released free of any obligations, including the wife and children, while the master was obligated to provide for them. As opposed to releasing the guy with no debt but saddled with heavy expenses that might force him back into servitude. While, of course, the woman was always in servitude anyway, so she’d be better off. But…

    ugh!

And, of course, it never occurs to anyone to just ask the couple if they want to stay together, or even if they wanted to be together in the first place, versus the slave owner wanting to own anther generation of slaves, and letting a male slave rape a woman slave for the sake of increased property.

    I’m reminded of Thomas Jefferson.

Actually, the next few verses are about what to do if the couple does want to stay together.

Of course, the solution is to have the man declare himself a lifelong slave of that same master, rather than anything that might involve the woman and kids going free, but it does get addressed.

Of course not. That would mean treating them as human beings when everyone knows only Real True Christians are actual humans. It says so right there, Trufax!

The Chick-fil-A Poem of the Day

    “Lorenzo and Maria”

Love, Lagos and Havana were the three ends
Of the rope that bound Lorenzo and Maria.

    Of course
They weren’t always Lorenzo and Maria.
Once upon a time they must have been
    Lamidi and Mojisola,
    Growing somewhere in Isale Eko,
Thinking of who to fall in love with
And when, and how many seed to spawn.

    Then War rose,
Waves of war, stout as Wailing walls,
Sweeping the conquered across the Great Sea
That entombed tall tales of adventurous pilgrims.
So they went, as we go.

But mercy shined and loosed their bonds.
Instead of an eternal flaming iron brand
Or a second-skin slithering steel necklace
They got a milder label: Emancipado.

So the story goes. But Chains still had their part
In the Plot. Cupid comes-a-calling, hawking
Nooses – the kind a Texas cowboy will love.
They haggle and fall for the deal.

Then the denouement. Home calls, first
In tiny whispers, then in that din so peculiar
To Lagos. Bags and Memories are packed
Names too, and Offspring, for they were
Not ashamed to count themselves Strangers
In the land, seeking a True Homeland.

I wonder if this could lead to some sort of cynical ploy carried out by some master to “entrap” a male slave.  You’ve got him for “only” seven years, but, if, during those seven years, you happen to see that he likes one of the young girls you also own, you can encourage the match, and then, bingo! There will almost certainly be offspring for you to keep (no really reliable BC back in those days), and if he doesn’t want to part from her, you get to keep him as a slave for life, as well.  A slave owner was almost certain to get more slaves out of it.
