5 years ago: All She Wants to Do Is Dance

That initial description of Abbas in her leopard-print tops and oversized jewelry reminded me of several larger-than-life women I have known — people of whom I’m enormously fond for their love of life and their cheerfully boisterous insistence that the world deal with them on their own terms. But as courageous in their own way as those women are, none of them lives in a place like Baghdad. None of them drove a van full of schoolchildren every day while living under Saddam’s dictatorship and then kept driving through the chaos of invasion, of a bungled occupation and civil war.

Azhar Abbas is awesome.

Azhar Abbas, Also Kown as “Dollar” is a free woman. She is free in the real world sense of the word . This means that she doesn’t give a fuck what anyone else thinks of her life or how she lives it. Millions of American men and women are NOT this free.

Azhar Abbas has realized in her life that you can live and be happy until the day you die, or you can cower in fear from the thoughts and opinions and possible actions of others and suffer a thousand cowardly “Deaths” until the end comes.

The former is desirable, the latter is SO not.

I honestly hope to emulate her example. to live my life the way I want to live it. And it harm none, do what I will.”

Because, as Ms. Abbas has probably figured out long ago, they can only kill me once and I’m going to die anyway, so the hell with it, I might just as well live until that happens.

Huzzah Azhar Abbas, you are the Woman!
