The Captain Slices and Dices Dowd and Rich

The Captain Slices and Dices Dowd and Rich February 17, 2005

It’s so nice of Captain Ed to to read Mo Dowd and Frank Rich for us so we don’t have to. Once again, Mo seems to be in odd synchronicity with another NY Times columnist and so we get the double-whammy on their chosen topic. This time she and her co-hort are carrying on about Gannon/Guckert, who seems to be mystifyingly important to the msm.

You never know what story is going to catch their fancy, you know?

250 veterans questioning John Kerry’s military mythology, including one who served on the boat with him, were not interesting to the press at all.

The msm had no curiousity about what one of their number might have said about American troops at a ritzy, very exclusive foreign gathering.

But THIS guy…this one guy…this lone schlemiel, ahhhh…HE has piqued their curiosity. HE has had his entire personal life put under a microscope. HE has been outted as a (gasp!) HOMOSEXUAL! (Not that there is anything wrong with that!)

And WHY is this one silly man being so singled out? I mean, you can read Rich’s and Dowd’s cavilling all you want – they are utterly predictable, but lost in all of this is the how and why of why Gannon/Guckert is even a story: It is because this fellow…in a room full of journalists…dared to ask the president a sympathetic question! And so they had to find out who he was…because a sympathetic question toward the president could not possibly be asked by anyone in the WH Press Corps.

Which says LOADS about the press, itself. But I don’t think they want to look at it.

What was that old saying: who will guard the guards?
