Archbishop Dolan talks to the NY Press

Video here

First question from the press – predictably – “are you going to be an agent of “change” for the people of New York?”

Sheesh. They really don’t get it. The video is well-worth watching. Take your measure of the man who will be the Bishop of “the capital of the world.” He dares to talk about “the supernatural family of the church.” Good.

Dolan penned a column for the Daily News and tell us, “I am to be a happy bishop”. Good for him, and for us.

If you get a chance, try to watch some of his installation – livestreamed here.

“Agent of change” — ! Does no one in the media understand that a church is supposed to be a conservative institution by its very nature? That every church exists to preserve and promulgate a set of doctrines about the unseen world and right action in this one?

The Catholic Church is the most conservative of all churches, which is one of the reasons it’s the most populous. What it means to be a Catholic doesn’t change much from century to century. We can school our children in it with some confidence.

Of course, it doesn’t hurt that it was founded by Christ Himself, rather than by a bilious schismatic with political ambitions or an illiterate camel driver who wanted free access to all the women of Arabia, but that’s a wrangle for another day.
